I cannot recommend Vera enough. It stars Brenda Blethyn as an older police detective in Northern England. It's on Acorn

(130,732 posts)has been on my PBS stations.

(3,270 posts)Blethyn is a no-nonsense older woman who is the least glamorous "star".
In the US, her character would probably be played by a Jennifer-Garner wannabe who is gorgeous and "old" by Hollywood standards but looks like 30.
I'm always impressed by the British shows where the main character is a middle-aged or older woman.

(618 posts)Aren't there a couple decades of programs? I started watching it in the beginning, with Amanda Burton.
My PBS station stopped showing it, so now I'm loving playing catchup.
Vera is awesome, mostly because Brenda is awesome.
Captioning is a great idea, going to try it, especially with Shetland.
Did you see they just made some new Midsomers?
Line of Duty is really good. They develop one story each season.

(23,586 posts)It was my go to series when I didn't want to start a new one. For a while I'd switch between SW and MI5, but MI5 only had 10 seasons.
Here's a bit of news about Amanda Burton:
https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a37878914/silent-witness-amanda-burton-sam-ryan-return-25th-anniversary/
She was on for 8 seasons so 17 years have gone by. She has aged, albeit gracefully.
Season 24 hasn't been released to Brit Box yet, probably in 2022 as it has just finished telecasting, so season 25 won't be available streaming until probably 2023.

(10,497 posts)Anxiously awaiting the newest one! All episodes are on Acorn.
Vera is missing some seasons, which is a pain

(34,131 posts)So you kind of have to go back and forth to watch them all - but it is worth it.
Fla Dem
(23,586 posts)If I do, I'll just sign just up long enough to watch the 2 seasons. Now that I think about it, I will do that.

(34,131 posts)Plus, they have a lot of other great British mysteries!

(11,242 posts)you really should give the Aussies, the Kiwis and some of the Scandinavian stuff a go. A lot of it is really, really solid. Not to mention just good entertainment.
Mystery Road
Brokenwood Mysteries
One Lane Bridge
Loch Ness
and, not a mystery - but anybody that had any interest in period series like Downton Abbey or Belgravia - a strong recommendation for 'A Place to Call Home.' Better than either of the above.
