(38,958 posts)Apparently I missed the every two year thing in my plan. As it is, they really dont pay that much anyway particularly on the lens part of the equation so I will have to bucks up some more dollars soon when the bill comes in.

I get my glasses from Zenni, and they start at under 10 bucks a pair. Made in China and sold direct. But what isn't made in China now?

(22,250 posts)Of course the insurance companies are selling them so it is a way for them to mke some $$.
Currently Medicare covers only the most basic lens whether in a frame or in your eye. There are a number of more comprehensive intraocular lenses out there some extremely expensive but are not covered - not even up to the coverage amount for the basic lens.
Even if the plan allowed coverage for more advanced lenses, rotsa ruck getting the manufacturers to negotiate a coverage amount.

(17,531 posts)It really hacks off the eye doctor, one of whom told me that he couldn't get glasses that cheap for his Mother, and couldn't understand why I wouldn't spend three to five times as much to get glasses through his office....After all, they fit them for you.
The last pair of glasses I bought, were bifocals, with the Transition type lenses, scratch resistance and attractive frames were about a hundred bucks. Since cataract surgery, I only need reading glasses. I buy them at Family Dollar for a buck a pair. They work perfectly and I have them all over the house! When you scratch the lenses, you just buy another half dozen pair.

(43,049 posts)I started using Zenni, they took a month or so to get here. Now it's only a week. Since they wait until they fill a container before shipping, I assume it's because business is good.
And why do I think that Costco, Walmart, and the other discount eyewear isn't from the same place...

(22,250 posts)I do have a sllight astigmatism and sometimes I need something to correct it. Still trying to get the "just right" power.
My doc did a prescription for me after my surgeries were healed but I haven't filled it yet.
I got a nice pair of no line bifocals from GlassesUSA. I was really impressed with the alignment - they were perfect.
I did not use them for the next pair because I just couldn't find a frame I wanted.
I will have to check out Zenni ! I may end up filling that prescription after all.

Medicaid pays for all three.

(6,359 posts)But it was a one time deal. When she needed new ones, they cost $6000. Fortunately, she could afford them.

(12,582 posts)It also pays $400 toward dental expenses. It's not a lot, but it's better than nothing.

(57,412 posts)I had $170 is a use it or lose it account. Spend it by midnight, or the money goes away.
I bought three pairs of glasses from Eye Buy Direct. I was going to buy two pairs, but I found an online coupon for 40 percent off. That made it possible for me to jam a third pair into the order for the same price.
This is not spam for Eye Buy Direct.

(35,325 posts)because I was 1 week short of their 2 year limit. They only pay about $200 of it anyway.

(18,402 posts)You usually have to purchase additional "vision insurance," which covers the cost of vision tests and a percentage of frames and lenses. Some are better than others.
Both traditional insurance and Medicare will pay for all ophthalmological visits and procedures.

(23,094 posts)It saved me about $120 on the glasses plus paid for the exam, and I still ended up paying nearly $500 and that didn't include the "transitions". I had extreme near sightedness plus astigmatism so they were extra expensive. The dental coverage sucked last year, so this year they made it substantially better.

(23,533 posts)glasses and eye exam. Going to Costco to have the prescription filled helped a lot, too.
