I was 17.
It wasn't quite an Impala, but it still looked cool.
Used to cruise the drive-ins in it with my buds.
A few beers were consumed.

73. maybe not

An alternative view was that Robert J. Eggert, Ford Division market research manager, first suggested the Mustang name. Eggert, a breeder of quarterhorses, received a birthday present from his wife of the book, The Mustangs by J. Frank Dobie in 1960. Later, the book’s title gave him the idea of adding the “Mustang” name for Ford’s new concept car. The original name for the car was the Torino.

78. toss up

"John Najjar, the original designer of the Mustang I Prototype (drawings) supposedly named his design after the P-51 Mustang airplane, but Lee Iacocca has stated a few times that it was directly named after the horse itself, not the airplane."

http://www.muscularmustangs.com/database/mustangfacts.php

Anyway, the 65 I'm restoring will have a horse in the grill, but it will eat more gas than grass.

80. I had a communications Prof in college...

who posited the theory that if you look at the names of a lot of the cars that came out in that era, you'll find some pretty damn clever marketing at work. The "Baby Boomers" were coming of age to start buying cars. The decision to manufacture "muscle cars", known primarily for speed, was no coincidence, and neither were the names, i.e. Mustang, Barracuda, Impala, etc. He felt it played right into the "pepsi generation" meme; youth, strength, speed, and energy. Iacocca also had one of the most ingenious marketing plans ever. As I understand it, he gave a Mustang to the president of every fraternity in the country to drive for a year. Need I say more?

Per Google I found over 5,000 frats in the US. Even in 64, that would be a lot of cars. I was a frosh in 1964 and knew at least one frat pres. He didn't have a car. I couldn't find any reference about the free Mustangs. Got a link?

Belonged to her dad. When they got back, the tester got out of the car shaking his head. My friend had to take the test again. Next time she did it in Mom's Chevelle.

41. We had one of the first 2,000.

It was great to drive...when it was running (which was a problem). Sure got a lot of attention, and was fun, though. I remember the five speed transmission had a metal plate over the gear box with slots to shift into. We ended up taking it off. Later the stick just broke off in my hand---metal fatigue, we were told. The mid-engine handled very well, but if left out in the rain, the grill (located behind the rear window) had to be covered, or you had to let it dry out before it would start. Ahh, memories...

49. How cool. I never drove one, but I did get a ride in '74.

In HS I worked part time at several used car lots on Mission Blvd in Hayward. One of the salesmen had a Pantera and took me for a ride up Carlos Bee Blvd toward Cal State East Bay. That road is pretty steep, but by the time we got to the top we were in fourth gear and doing 100mph. Slammed back in the seat, it was a wild ride.

the Snake and the Mongoose were as much super-heroes as Superman to me. I remember building their Revell models (well, I think it was Revell - weren't most model cars back then?) and waiting for the funny cars to come on TV...

I also had a Shirley Cha Cha Muldowney model kit...man those were good times.

75. Speaking of Don and Tom

They just made a movie about the Mongoose and Snake

http://www.snakeandmongoosemovie.com/

They needed a Zookeeper back then. This is John the Zookeeper Mulligan beating the Snake at the 1968 Winternationals:

John died in 1969, succumbing to burns from a horrible fire qualifying for the U.S. Nationals.

Lest we forget Jungle Jim

Shirley's accomplishments - three time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion, resulted in a biopic about her
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085656/

Shirley's accomplishments in drag racing in that era were stunning. She beat all the guys regularly back when "women's lib" was merely some quaint aberration for disgruntled bra burners.

There's plenty of stellar drag racers, Tom The Mongoose McEwen and Tommy Ivo among them, that raced for decades and never ever won a single World Championship.
