Been out of work for almost 2 years. Went on disability due to a car accident and was just coming off when Covid hit... now it's like Ive been in a freaking bubble since then.
Been trying to find all kinds of work online, even tried a couple front desk gigs at local resorts when things opened up. I really think I have been getting Age-discrimination, at 51 the opportunities are limited...
So I was blown away when I actually got hit up by a recruiter for a big resort! She saw my resume on Indeed and reached out! I thought it was just for a run-of-the-mill front desk position, but they really want me for my writing and editing experience!
Friday was a phone interview, tomorrow is the meeting of the supervisor and property tour. I haven't received an "official" offer but they sent me the benefist package information so I am hoping that is a good sign. There's a signing bonus too!
now I just have to figure out how to get there!

(13,359 posts)Only ONE pair of my nice pants still fits! ....and a couple blouses are not gonna fit with a bra!
lol
I guess once I start working I will lose weight cuz I wont be just sitting here like a blob all day!
Phentex
(16,334 posts)took three inches off my bust so I could fit into a shirt. Only did it once and it took a bit of work to not look lumpy but it worked! It was a button down shirt in a dark fabric and I wore a tank under just in case.
Just sayin.

(67,782 posts)But I had four or five in the closet.
Well, we planned a small event at a hotel conference room (20 people), so it wasn't totally formal. I planned to wear one of my suits. A couple of days before the wedding I decided to try on a suit. It didn't fit me! I'd gained about 20 pounds or so. Tried on another one. Didn't fit! None of them fit. It was too late to buy a new suit, so we moved the button over a little and I was able to get the waistline buttoned, and I put on a strong belt just in case the button popped.
I drove home later that day with my pants open!

(21,421 posts)Regarding the gas, I was in that situation once after being on unemployment during a recession. When I finally landed an interview for a good job, I didn't have gas money to get to the interview and to work and back each day if I got hired. I tried the Salvation Army, which was in walking distance of where I lived.
They gave me a voucher for enough gas to fill my tank, plus a box of food (which I had not asked for). I always donate to them now.
I got the job, too.

(13,359 posts)Looked at the detailed job description they sent as well...I can totally do this! maybe a tad rusty on data-entry but that will come back ...
BobTheSubgenius
(11,562 posts)I'm more convinced than ever that you're going to kill this. The dexterity for the data entry will be back in a day or two. Just doing it will make that happen.
Very best of luck to you...not that you are going to need it.

(13,359 posts)I had been halfheartedly looking, selling myself short, feeling so awful after being on disability had me worried I could NEVER do full time again...
But I felt NO hesitation when we were talking, it just "felt right" so when she tolkd me the hours were 10-6 I was stoked cuz I hate early and have a hard tome getting to work and used to call in cuz morning hate me...
SO onboard with this whole "corporate" gig.... figure I can milk it till retirement maybe

(1,517 posts)If you need me to Venmo some gas money let me know in a DM.
If notthen I hope you kill it in your interview.
The age discrimination started for me at your age. But it is an employee market right now. I was able to get a job in my field (information tech sales) at my advanced age. Thats after having to sell cars for 7 years because I couldnt get an interview.
The worm has temporarily turned. Enjoy while it lasts.

(24,653 posts)I hear you loud and clear. I have only been job hunting for eight months and it is thoroughly demoralizing. I make sure I check every last qualifications box or I don't apply. If I am not certain I can do the job cold and do it well, I don't apply.
* I have applied to 235 jobs since 10/06/2020 - 231 days ago.
* Gotten a phone screening/first round interview for 11. That's 4.7% of jobs I am qualified or over-qualified for willing to even consider me.
* Recruiters and direct reports love me and are excited to pass me on if I can get past the "unfortunately we're not putting you into consideration" rejection email straight out of the gate.
* Of those 11, I made it to the next round 9 times.
* Of those 9 second round interviews, I made it to the third round 8 times.
* Of those 8 interviews, I made it through subsequent rounds whether that be another interview or five more, to the last interview before making the decision.
* 8 times I have gotten a "thanks but we're going in a different direction" email. Half of those re-posted the effing job after they rejected me in the final round. So apparently starting over was better than hiring me.
I guess I piss off someone in the C-suite in some way, but darned if I can figure out how. I have a proven track record of success, know my shit, and have glowing references. It's brutal out there.
Knock 'em dead, FirstLight!!!
