Yesterday I found out that my son was vaccine hesitant. He was too busy, he'd have to miss work, his arm might be sore, what if it's not necessary, blah blah blah.
My son is 53 years old. He lives in an area of Louisiana where he can just walk in to a clinic and get the vaccine. He's a big guy (about 300 lbs.) and I told him if he gets Covid it will not go well for him. (His wife is vaccinated.)
I clucked like a chicken and called him a scaredy-cat.
He just texted me a picture of his card showing he got his first Moderna today. I guess he listened to his mother.

(22,599 posts)I'm glad you were able to shame him into getting vaccinated. I'm working on my resistant sister. She's the type that will lie and say she got it when she didn't, just to get over and for the sociopath thrill of it. Any ideas? I'm just getting tired of what feels like an uphill battle. ❤

(4,657 posts)I only half believe her. Maybe when I'm in the same city, I'll say "I'll show you mine if you show me yours!" (cards, that is, lol)

(22,599 posts)She was a Royale PITA growing up. I sometimes wish she'd just go to one (or two or three) of those 'rona mask burning superspreader events and put herself and everyone else out of their misery. Maybe the next wave of variants will free us of them all...

I think we need to remember that about 30% of all Americans will do something because someone called them chicken or told them they could not do it.
The chicken argument I think is the most effective. "What's wrong? Are you afraid of a little needle? Or are you worried that your arm will hurt so much you can't pick up your panties? They will give you a lollypop and distract you with a sock puppet. Or are you to chicken? Oh your afraid of the government-I thought you said they could kiss your ass but oh Lordy no little needles "
The liberal redneck had a great video on this. He's a pro at it - I'm just paraphrasing.

(1,815 posts)Not even my asking him if he wants the last ignorant asshole in Ventura, worked.
He has been a Covid is a joke and he will not be vaccinated or let his family be vaccinated.

(658 posts)The day after the governor announced a mandatory mask mandate, the county - Santa Rosa County - citizens started a petition to force the county to over-turn the mandate. They were successful shortly after to over-turn the mandate. I'd say less than 30% of the people in the county wore masks during the height of things. Now I'd say that less than 10% are wearing masks. My guess is that since 70% of the people in the county are registered republicans, that probably 30% of the people in the county will get the vaccine. I got mine, and so has my wife. Both shots... Medurna.
I feel relatively safe now, but who knows what variants will come into play in the future. I'd love to simply say "screw'em" but I'm not that guy.
We live in a weird time in history. I'm wondering how far this is going to go. Hopeful that it won't go too far. I'm an optimist.

(204,820 posts)Every time I see him, I've brought it up and I know he's getting tired of hearing it. My brother isn't exactly "anti-vax," but he's also agoraphobic, doesn't like to leave the house, so he thinks he doesn't need it. But he does occasionally go to the close by gas station/convenience store (I brought him a "real" mask, since he tried to make his own) and has been to the doctor - but as of Thursday, the nearby state vaccine clinic opened up to walk-ins, and I stopped by today and suggested this was a good opportunity to get it done - and after a few protests, he went with me! So he got his first Pfizer, has to go back in 3 weeks. And this place was giving out stickers - I didn't get one when I went to CVS a month ago, so they gave me a sticker, too.

(28,774 posts)he's promised to do it soon but could have had it months ago because he works in a grocery, but still dragging his feet. I've tried everything else i can think of, mostly nagging incessantly. i'll ask him today are you afraid of a little shot in your arm? i mean he was in the Navy and they fill recruits with more shots at one time than most humans will ever have to endure.

(1,668 posts)He might have good reason to be afraid. The Tucker Carlson devotees are already wound up, and the pitch of screeching from Faux keeps going higher and higher. Pretty soon only bats will be able to hear them, but in the mean time they're advocating violence against vaccinated people, a private school has decided not to employ people who got vaccinated. Social pressure is very real.
