My dastardly wife and I just laid a goof of a time bomb

To be clear, my use of the words "time bomb" has nothing to do with explosives. In this context, a time bomb is a gag that one sets up but will probably never know if the goof pays off. You lay the trap and walk away. Maybe it hits. Maybe not. It doesn't matter if you know what happens. Of course, there are occasions when a spoof has huge results.

My wife's late husband had a collection of "Chinese coins" that he had bought from street vendors in New York City. He had also collected a significant number of Spanish silver eight reales that turned out to be worth a significant amount of money. As expected, it turned out that the "Chinese coins" were worthless.

They were stored in an Italian wine box so I devised a time bomb.

We went to an Atlantic Ocean beach area that is popular among tourists since it was a famous pirate's haunt, (I can't tell you where it is because...). After the Sun had set, we walked onto the beach and trudged about 200 yards from the beach ramp. I dug a hole in the sand, we tossed several handfuls of coins around the area and I buried the box, containing the rest of the coins, with a corner of the box sticking out of the sand hoping that it would be discovered.

Since there are many myths about pirate treasure on this island, we hope to spring a prank on someone, just for fun.

This amuses me and I've had a few good laughs. Am I a bad person?

3. I would be great if a kid found it

because those worthless coins would be part of a real treasure then, instead of being tossed into a landfill out of spite and disappointment.

The giveaway to a grownup would be the modern wine box.

I've actually been known to plant a few things, myself.

6. So far, our local friends haven't reported anything

I have feeling that anyone who finds the box will realize it's a goof.

Appropriately, the joke will be on me.

5. I love it!

Your idea is kind of like the kid in "The Last Action Hero" who gets the magic movie theater ticket.

Except in my stupid goof, the coins are fake. I'm a dork.

9. No,... but that is offensive to the brotherhood of pirates...

... you just committed an offense against their main charter of organization,

Section 1, Paragraph 3,...

Impersonation of a pirate, and falsification of buried treasure.

You have to drink three bottles of Jamaican Rum in one sitting.

11. Nah...

When Super Glue came out I used it to glue Nickels and Dimes and Quarters on Stops Signs everywhere. Never saw the results tho.

12. That's great and i think you got me!

Once upon a time, I was at a mid-western airport in the pre-cell phone era and went to the bank of pay phones to make a call. On top of the phone I chose was a quarter, as if left there by a previous traveler. It was crazy-glued to the top of the phone.

I'd hate you except that a) I had another quarter and b) I laughed so hard when i figured out your goof!

Hat tip, amigo.

14. Chinese coins found buried on an Atlantic Ocean beach?

OK ... but if I were the finder, I'd be a little dubious as to how they got there.

Still, it is a good joke on someone.

Police find lead-contaminated coins scattered on beach... search for the perp is on!
