Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust got my flu and pneumonia shots today.
I was feeling fine until a few hours ago, and then I suddenly felt like I was hit by a truck.
I know it's not the flu, just my body's immune response kicking in as a reaction to the vaccines, but I still feel like hell. The good thing is, it will only last a day or two. The past few years I had no reaction at all.
Have you had your flu shots and if so, how did you feel afterward?

(23,531 posts)for a day or two after each injection. BUT, from what I have heard about the shingles it was very much worth it

(63,221 posts)That wasn't too bad.
Maybe it was the combination of both. I'm kind of young for a pneumonia shot, but I have a heart condition and I'm in my mid-50's so they agreed to give it to me as a precaution. Hopefully it will be gone by tomorrow. I wouldn't have wanted to wait much longer. Not this year.

(63,221 posts)Maybe it was having both shots at once.

(2,271 posts)Never had any symptoms after the flu shot, but I have never taken the pneumonia shot.

(12,265 posts)I felt like crap for three days, could not lift my arm for two days. It will pass and is worth it!

(63,221 posts)But that makes me think that it might have been having both shots at once. I was actually Googling it afterward and I read something from an immunologist who said it was actually a good sign if you felt flu-ish afterward because it meant that your natural defenses were kicking in, which is what makes you feel sick in the first place.
The flu doesn't make you feel sick, it's your body's immune response that causes your symptoms, so I thought that was a little reassuring.

I got a flu shot a few weeks ago, but I want a pneumonia shot too. I was really sore after the flu shot, much more this year than normal. Lasted several days. But that's all, just soreness in my arm and shoulder.
You are one tough cookie to handle both! I hope you feel better soon.

(63,221 posts)The NP told me that the pneumonia shot would make my arm hurt for about 5 days or so, but that doesn't really bother me. I can handle a bit of soreness. I broke my proximal humerous a few years ago, and compared to that pain, the soreness from a shot is nothing.
She didn't say anything about any other symptoms though. I just wanted to get it all over with at once. Hopefully, it will go away quickly. Luckily I am still wfh, so I don't have to be out and about. Thanks for your well wishes!

(1,023 posts)Came home and took advil and allowed myself one day to wallow. My arm is a little tender today.

(63,221 posts)Just in case. Usually I try to get it toward the end of the week in case something like this happens, but at least I am still wfh and can work from bed if necessary. If I really don't feel well, I can always take a sick day.
Hope your arm feels better soon!

(1,023 posts)I was just looking for an excuse for self care. You take care, too.

(6,110 posts)Took 3-4 days to feel normal again. Affected me more than most recent years. I just lay around for a couple of days with a slight fever.

(63,221 posts)Maybe the (dead) viruses this year produce a stronger immune response in certain people.
I don't know, but I don't remember the last time I have felt this awful after being vaccinated.

(31,979 posts)I felt OK until the next day, when I felt weak and tired. I took a 2 hour nap the following afternoon, then I felt fine.
It was the shingles shots that really made me feel like crap. Especially the second one, which most people say isnt as bad as the first one.
Sorry you feel awful, SM, hope youre all better soon!

(63,221 posts)The worst part is the body aches. My whole body hurts, like it does when you have the flu. I also feel weak and tired. Hopefully I will get a good night's sleep and will be fine in the morning, but it's been many, many years since I have had a reaction even close to this from a flu vaccination.
On the other hand, my shingles shots didn't really have any side effects at all, but I wonder if that is because I never really came down with chicken pox as a child?
Oh well, thank you for your well wishes! Have a good evening!

(7,595 posts)I haven't gotten my flu shot yet, but I'm working on it. I delay getting it because it makes me feel icky and nauseous several hours afterwards.
It's completely normal to feel icky after receiving it. If or when you're up for it, here's a link that perhaps could be helpful. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/feeling-sick-getting-flu-shot-150519027.html

(63,221 posts)I know what you mean. It's not pleasant. I'm feeling worse and worse. However, I am sure it's only a temporary immune system reaction and won't last long.
Thank you for the link! I appreciate it! Don't wait too long to get your shot though! You don't want to risk it during these dangerous times! Good luck!

(7,595 posts)I'm sure it won't last long, but it's enough to make me delay getting it and I know exactly what you're talking about with the reaction.
I promise that I will get my flu shot. The last thing I want is to be in the hospital with a potentially deadly flu virus while Covid19 is lurking around like a crazed banshee. Thank you for the luck. Feel better soon, take care and take it easy

(63,221 posts)However, I am impatient and like to get everything taken care of in one fell swoop. Also got blood drawn for another appointment. The less I have to show up in a doctor's office, the better. Oh well, I guess it's my own fault.

(23,338 posts)Late that night, my temp spiked about 102, briefly, then down below 100. It was normal by morning. It was accompanied by shivering almost to locked-muscle paralysis, again briefly.
My reaction lasted a few hours total. But it was a scary one.
My second flu shot was a year later, a few weeks after my annual flu shot, ha.
You'd think a pharmacist might say "you know how stupid this is?". But no.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)least not much of one, but I just don't want to eat or do much of anything. The NP only told me that my arm would hurt for a few days. She didn't say anything about any other symptoms I might have.
It sounds like you had a really bad reaction! A fever that high is pretty scary. I'm glad it didn't last very long for you!
