Mighty ducks fight pests in South Africa | Eco-at-Africa
DW News

White dune snails are wreaking havoc on grape vines in South African vineyards. Ducks - and not chemical pesticides - are being used to fight them. That's good news for bees and other insects.

Ducks Trained to Manage Rice Paddies in Thailand

This farmer trains his ducks to do this work. It takes two months of training before they are ready. He hires out their service to rice farmers. The ducks enter rice field three times per rice growing cycle.

They eat insects that are destroying the rice and then fertilize the crop with their manure. Back at the farm they lay 500-700 eggs/day in rainy season and 2000-2500 eggs/day the rest of the year. Quite a feat of organic, sustainable method combining farming and animal husbandry.

---------------

Love the way the ducks spiral down out of his truck.

2. How the hell do you get all the ducks you've released out of their nasty cages

Into their natural habitat ... back IN to the cages when their workday is done?

Seems like they'd be all 'fuck that I'm out!'

And when there's 1000 of them ... at least some of them would escape every day.

Maybe their wings are clipped so they don't feel like they could survive on their own?

5. Hey, why quack a complaint when you've got a good thing going?

The duck man in the Thailand video toward the end blew a referee's whistle and they all came running. When he got them home, they got extra feed.

I couldn't understand what the narrator was saying but it seemed obvious what's happening - in both videos the ducks get to gorge themselves with juicy bugs every day and that makes those farmers very happy too.

6. Not a complaint, I think this is bona-fide full-blown straight-up AWESOMENESS ...

I just had that 1 question about how they pull off rounding up 1000 ducks that've been released.

I guess they're well-trained!
