Hard to get past the sheer sadness of his story, but man, he was, and still is if you can trust the stories of the other Beach Boys, a brilliant musician.

Lennon and McCartney had each other and George Martin. Brian had, well, Brian (with some great lyrics from Gary Usher and Van Dyke Parks).
