We thought we were too old for another dog and then Rosie walked in.

We didn't want to outlive a dog, so we have been without.
Our good friend and next door neighbor is a dog rescuer.

She will periodically (when she can spare the time from
her family of 4 and running an incredibly complicated business) get dogs on death row from the county 'animal rescue' facility and try and find either foster homes or forever homes for them.
Rosie was scheduled to be put down in a week.

She's a medium sized Rottweiler/German Shepherd(maybe?) mix.
About 65 pounds.
Age is estimated at 9.
Rosie has a very gray muzzle, and she has one speed.
SLOW

Anyway...in dog years Rosie is just a few years younger than I am.
We can tell she's had a hard life.
Rotten teeth.
Cowed demeanor.
Tail tucked between legs.

We've had her for almost two weeks.
Been to the vet. Twice.
Rotten teeth extracted.
Antibiotics and pills for arthritis.
She's getting the right amount of calories every day and wolfing it down.
The tail has come up and we even are getting some wags now.
And kisses.

Damn it's just good to have a dog again.

1. The most special people I know adopt/foster ONLY older dogs.

They have the biggest hearts as do those dogs.

4. I'm kind of like you, think I'm too old for another dog

But maybe an older rescue dog. Maybe after the shutdown loosens up a little. Pictures please.

15. Here:

https://postimages.org/

Click the "choose images" button

Choose an image from your hard drive and click "open" then:

After the upload is completed, choose the "hotlink for Forums" (third from bottom, the copy button is on the right)

Then paste it to your post. You can delete all of the junk before the https and after the jpg

32. She's a super sweet mutt from the pound we adopted 5 years ago

I never understood cropping Pitty's ears, but her ears take so much damage that I kind of get it now.

Although I don't advocate for it, I get the logic now.

Her ears are notched and scarred because she has sensitive skin and when she gets irritated she scratches her ears.

When she shakes her head, the tips of her ears always (ALWAYS) catch the edge of a table or the corner of a wall.

But, she is super sweet and here is her secret - she already loves you. If she ever meets you she will let you know how much.

11. We did the same thing

and found us a 4 year old that has been the light of our lives since he came to live with us. We were so depressed over the loss of one of the best boys ever at only 9 years old and then I saw his face on a Pet Savers site and we were done. He is a big one, will likely not live more than to be 12, 14 at the most I would guess so that means that he will be with us until I am 78 or 80.

Rescues always amaze me. I am certain there are times it just does not work out but we have always had such good luck with them. Thanks for rescuing Rosie. She knew you needed her.

12. Bless you for helping this elderly dog. As an elderly person, I know that I am not able to

adopt a young animal, but I've been able to foster kittens, cats, and my sister and I even adopted a senior cat who was left homeless when his former family could no longer care for him. There's an animal waiting for you. If you need a companion, one is waiting for you.

25. We took in a 2 year old

Rottweiler/Shepherd mix. Spike had been chained in the backyard for two years. When the owners came home he would run to greet them, tail wagging. They completely ignore him. He did not even have a dog house in the Wisconsin winters. A neighbor called the humane society, and the owners had to build him a home. Plywood, no insulation. I finally asked if I could have him, since I had a large fenced in yard. Took him to the vet. Ear mites and worms. He was the most loveable guy, just a big teddy bear. Very well behaved, and handsome too. I heard that one of the original owners kids told the neighbor "My dad said if we get another dog, we will treat him better than we treated Spike" They had no idea what a treasure they had. At 9, he developed bone cancer, and I had to put him to sleep. My husband had already passed by then. He would have been brokenhearted, he loved Spike too. Spike brought a lot of love and happiness into our lives. He loved everyone he met. Your Rosie sounds just as sweet. I hope you have many happy years together.

35. I found out that "Shepweiler" is a 'thing'.

Not recognized by the AKC, but one of the most popular cross-breeds.
cool
