This is the post we all dread making someday...

Last edited Tue May 28, 2019, 09:33 AM - Edit history (1)

But two weeks ago on May 10 we lost our beloved rescue Maltese (Mimi) after a happy long life. We'd had her almost seven years and her age was guesstimated to be 10-11...

Please take this moment to step away from DU for a bit and give your companion animals an extra scratch for me... Thanks.

EDIT: As you can tell, this loss has hit our family hard. But I want to thank all of you for such touching and heartfelt messages because they DO make a difference and they DO mean a lot to us...

It's always hard to lose one of our furbabies, no matter how long they've been in our lives.

2. Doing it now... everyone who has lost a beloved dog (or pet) learns how much you must treasure

every single day and minute. No matter how tired, how cranky, how preoccupied I am I start the day with hugs and play time and end the day similarly.

So sorry for the loss of your beloved...

Thanks for the reality reminder.

And yes, this is an awful post to have to make but thank you for sharing with us and allowing us to be there for you. When I lost my babydog a few years ago, the folks at DU with all their kind words really helped me get through such a sad time.

12. Done. You have my empathy.

We had to put our big old lab mix down about 2 months ago. He had bone cancer and the vet said it was for the best. He had just turned 10 and we had him since he was a puppy. We were hoping to have a couple of more years with him so it was a real heart-breaker for us. We still have our old Samson who's probably about 14 now, and we have a herd of cats too.

16. I have been there too many times...remembering the happy times helps.

I hope you are able to grieve and then remember fondly your time together and take solace in having provided a loving home and sharing your time together.

Our family is going to soon be facing this difficult decision with our rescue mutt...she is a bigger dog (over 50 lbs) and 10 years old but losing mobility fast. It is starting to get hard on her to go up and down stairs. We try to treasure the time we have left as much as possible, but she'll get some extra pets and hugs tonight...

I'm so sorry to hear that, but after being part of your family, and giving and receiving enormous amounts of love, she will be waiting for you in Heaven. After all, love never dies. I always say that if there are no animals on Heaven,.then I'm not going. God loves our pets too and would never take them away from us forever. When your soul transitions, Mimi will be one of the first to greet you!

The hardest part about having fur babies is that we outlive them. Their loss is always hard to handle, but we will grieve and then find another fur baby that needs us. Its part of the cycle of life with pets. Bless you for the good years you gave Mimi. Here is a light for her when she crosses the Rainbow Bridge and a hug for you !

I now have 4 kitties that have their scratch and treat in honor of Mimi.

45. Losing a beloved companion is one of the hardest things.

When they go, they take a piece of our hearts with them. But in time you will discover that they leave a piece of their heart in please of the part they took.

I don't know if there is an afterlife for us or not, but I absolutely believe, to the very core of my being, that if there is, then our pets will be there as well. In so many ways they are so much better than we are that it would be inconceivable that we could go on without them.

48. I've got two that are getting extra scratches right now

One is a West Highland Terrier that will be 14 this July. He's getting slower and slower, but still makes certain to look up and give me a tail wag whenever I walk into the room. The other is a mix (Mom was a Toy Poodle, Dad was a Bichon mix) but he's only 5 1/2 pounds and will be 5 in December. Both will be next to me on a trip North next week for the Summer. Both have special places in my heart, and both certainly know how to put themselves into my Dad's lap whenever he settles into his easy chair when we go for a visit.

49. I am facing the same thing with my Peagle. (Peke and Beagle)

He had been a warehouse dog that I took to teach the Collie I had rescued that people can be loving and trusted. The collie was afraid of everything. He learned what love was and was with us until we guessed he was about 15. Now the Peagle is about 18, is almost blind, can't hear too good, has fatty tumors all over his body but still has a saucy attitude even though he has slowed way down. Sometimes when he is sleeping so soundly, I am afraid to check him for fear he is not just sleeping.
I am 75 and hubby is 83 and neither of us are in good health so Sam will be our last fur child. It would be unfair to adopt another one, teach it to trust us and then leave it.
Such is life.

50. My sincerest sympathy

We have a 5 yr old pekingese my wife brought home on day after we rsn around Europe for 5 weeks. She fell in love with the idea of having a cute little pooch to call her own, much to my chagrin.

Love the little guy, but it must be every day that I reflect on hard that is going to be, one day, when he will need to be put down. I just dread that day coming.

Wosh you well. I know it's not a mother, father, spouse or child...but they are "man's best friend" for good reasons.

63. Much love to Mimi.

Six months ago we lost our much loved rescue cat, Maddie, a beautiful Tortie, after a dozen years. She was normally active and eating all day. In the evening she began breathing rapidly and tried to crawl behind a piece of furniture, but let me coax her out and hold her, even though I assumed she was going. Finally she jumped away and crawled under my bed and was gone. She was good at her last vet check six months before. Our remaining cat, who she mothered a lot, took a long while to stop missing her. I grew up and lived and worked with dogs, cats, and horses all my life, Of course I've often lost, or had to "put down" former well-loved animals. What I find ironic is that, in the last few years, I've lost Maddie AND a previously healthy dog, just reaching older age at eight for a big dog(Afghan Hound). Both simply dropped dead after being apparently in good health. Just out of nowhere. I never had this happen in all the years before.

70. I'm am so sorry for your loss

of your precious Mimi.

Thank you, for the great suggestion to devote time to the special pets we have in our family. You are so right on that. I will follow that directive. Peace and blessings
