Does the US punish Putin and Russia for their crimes

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the The DU Lounge forum).

against our democratic process through cyber warfare when this whole conspiracy by tRump and Putin and the treasonous acts is confirmed by our government eventually? When it is all wrapped up and it is proven do we just impose more sanctions? Do we punish them publicly or will the govt do it behind closed doors?

1. De-accreditation of their diplomatic mission for 10 years is the least we can do

According to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations a host country can't punish anyone who's an accredited diplomat.

What you CAN do is throw them out of the country. In diplomatic terms, the diplomat is declared "persona non grata" and is expelled from the host country.

I don't know if the US ever threw every diplomat another nation sent to the US out of the country, but there's a first time for everything.
