(26,249 posts)Glad I bought some good candy - and even more glad that I didn't second guess myself and buy more. Every single year I get fewer and fewer kids stopping by. I guess most are now going to parties. Yea, it's safer but I sure miss seeing the little ones in their cute costumes.
One of my neighbors brought her little girl, and she said I'm one of the few with my lights on and Jack O Lanterns in the window. This makes me very sad, indeed.

(7,362 posts)Some neighbors with the younger families are very active though.
When I was a child, our streets literally were full of children up and down the streets. It was like a block party!

(3,433 posts)The streets around my neighborhood were covered in kids and then I would head off to my grandmother's for round two. There would be lines up to each door. Driving around tonight with my 2 year old, there were very few children about. Kind of sad.

(26,249 posts)Always wore costumes - usually home made. And we carried the candy in pillow cases.
The best candy was handed out at the funeral home (at that time the family lived in the upstairs) - maybe because kids were afraid to go there so they really treated those of use brave enough to knock.
mysteryowl
(7,362 posts)Well, I never --
Yes, a pillow case or a paper bag rolled down and we decorated it the day before.

(1,332 posts)Yeah, the weather is so nice, in the 50's and no rain or snow. I love the little ones in their costumes. Driving the dogs nuts, but they'll survive.
my favorite holiday
And haven't seen a trump mask but got compliments on my signs for Gretchen Whitmer, Winnie Brinks and Rachel Hood (Grand Rapids Michigan).

(7,362 posts)It is a fun holiday.
I just had a young girl come, about 8 y/o, and she clearly had a seamstress parent put together her shinny purple witch outfit.

(3,433 posts)My mother had some show up though including two teenage girls who were at least 15 wearing no costume at all. They held out a cvs bag for the candy. No trick or treat or thank you. Just the bag held out. I wasnt amused.
Luciferous
(6,078 posts)kids multiple pieces but she only gave them one each, and only because they were with a group of younger kids.

(3,433 posts)If they are chaperoning and no costume. We always offer the parents a piece of candy or two. These two knuckleheads were by themselves. First to show up at the house actually. My mother was a high school teacher so it was not uncommon to see teenagers show up at the house but they were always her students. Most of the time they had costumes or at least make an attempt. I think they got a kick out of seeing my mother outside of the school. My mother's long since retired though.

(7,362 posts)We have young ones and I like seeing the parent that stands at the end of the driveway. I had a couple boys about 11-12 and they had a parent with them too.

(7,394 posts)Consequently we get many kids from neighboring towns that are driven here by their parents/grandparents.
which is a good thing. Safer. Kids have supervision. No problem as far as I am concerned.

(23,586 posts)Several churches have Halloween events for the kids. Guess it keeps them off the streets.

(62,379 posts)used to be when our kids were young BUT ..................
our little town now has a trick or tweet trail on their fitness training. Started about 4 years ago and we have been going there the past two years.
Last year we ran out after20 minutes, but I was giving two pieces at a time. This year we had 4 bags @ 190/bag. Made it 50 minutes.
Next year 5 bags and we'll try to make the full hour.
Great costumes - lots of superheroes, witches and Wonder Women.

(979 posts)We had 6 times as many last year. It makes me wonder if people are scared to let their kids out. Can't imagine why 😣. If so you know they are Trump supporters. And this is Connecticut. That being said I just had a very polite young lady dressed in a Wonder Woman costume. I love that.
mysteryowl
(7,362 posts)Wonder woman seems to be a big hit this year. That is fun!

(7,362 posts)I just had a group of 8 young women come. They were about 14 y/o and each one had some kind of costume. Good for them!

Oh well, waste not want not. Guess I'll have to eat it - although it may take several weeks.

(11,904 posts)We had about 50 kids and their families this year. The theme was Disney's Haunted Mansion. We gave out glow in the dark rubber duckies, party-sized cans of play-doh, and a mix of chocolate and gummi candy. I had crock pots of dinner fixings in the house for our kids and their friends.
Next year, on to Pirates of the Caribbean!
Olafjoy
(937 posts)It was really fun. I carved a pumpkin that said VOTE
Tiny ones and big ones. All very polite with lots of Thank you and Happy Halloween
A few of the tiny ones blew kisses and one said I love you. It makes me laugh when they
are so excited that they run in the house when you open the door😂😂
I have candy left and I will take it with me and distribute it when I am canvassing this
weekend.

(38,529 posts)...until there were only 30 minutes left for trick-or-treating.
Normally, we would light a fire in the fire pit, decorate the yard, prepare mulled cider and hot chocolate, pipe some scary Halloween sounds into the yard, get out the smoke machine, and dish out the treats.
This year, we just didn't have it in us. I'll bet the neighborhood was wondering what happened to us.
We did welcome Al's granddaughter and made sure we had a few treats for her.

(6,102 posts)During the first half hour, I had about 30 kids. Then nothing. Now I'm stuck with a big basket full of candy.
It's hard to get rid of after Halloween. Any suggestions?

(3,275 posts)My goal is to someday own a house. I would love to give out candy on Halloween. I have never done that. Growing up, my family lived in a rural area so there were no trick or treaters.
