In my state, I have to wait until Election Day. The polls open at 6:00am. Fortunately, I can vote two blocks from where I live. I always vote in the morning as soon as they open. Then I go home, have breakfast and go to work.
My parents and brothers live in states where you can vote early so they are already done.

(3,275 posts)I think it would be fun to vote in a fire station. In my voting history, I have voted in a church, a school and a community center.
Rhiannon12866
(202,970 posts)And the first time I went there, I went in the entrance nearest me - which was where the firemen were! Oops! I had to go around to the other side of the building.

(15,238 posts)That's surprising.

(202,970 posts)At least it's not far and I've never had to worry about being turned away. Though my dentist did have a problem in 2016. She's lived at the same address for years, but she wasn't on the rolls, so she had to go to city hall and was only able to cast a provisional vote.
Polybius
(15,238 posts)Wow, I've never heard of that, but it's pretty cool actually. I thought the only places to vote on Election Day were at public schools.

(3,590 posts)If you work for the elections and you will not be near your polling place, or if you are working and can't get off work? Not sure about that one doing this from memory. Or if for some reason you will be out of town on election day and I think there may be one more but they are all stringent rules. I guess the legislature/ AG decides what the rules are. You can vote absentee but I think the same rules apply. I am not sure about all of this I am doing this from memory.

That's right ... me, and my crew of Guatemalans and Honduran Illegals, most of 'em riding on the roof of the bus, just like ya see in the pic here.
And in between all our dropping hits of acid, collecting large government welfare checks, and of course stealing the identities of Honest Christian Folk, we're just totally VOTING OUR ASSES OFF, in like EVERY STATE ... with all kinds of fake ID's and birth certificates, just goin' all 'Bonnie and Cecilia' ...

(1,533 posts)This will be my second election as assistant head judge. We have new iPad Pollbooks instead of the looseleaf binder pollbooks and they have scared off some of the older, long term election judges.
They are much faster and have many features. If the first three letters of your first and last names don't bring you up, we search on your birthday. If you are still not found, we enter you address which will confirm if you are in the right place. If not, we will print directions to your precinct polling place. If you are, we will register you right there if you have the needed ID.
Being assistant head judge means bringing the jump drive, printed election results, and various gear back to city hall after the polls close and equipment is packed up. Makes for a near 15 hour day.

(38,452 posts)I will vote on election day. I'm hoping to make an outing of it w/ my parents. My mom has alzheimer's and she often refuses to leave the house. (I think she's embarrassed that she doesn't remember people.) Anyway, I have arranged for my dad to drive us to the polls (as I don't have a registered vehicle) and I'm hoping we can all go to lunch afterwards.
My mom was very active up until about 2 years ago. She volunteered at the local nursing home, did a lot of things for the church and even cared for her own flower gardens. These days getting her out of the house is a bit of a chore.
I have found that if I ask her to go church with me, she'll jump at that chance.
When we do go to mass together, some of the other parishioners are happy to see her.
Win-win-win. Mom gets out of the house. The community is happy to see her. I get to spend time w/ mom.
Anyway, I'll vote on 11/6.

(33,368 posts)Many years ago, my congressman, Rush Holt, in his first bid for re-election was reported to have lost by some tiny number of votes. I was traveling then too, at a conference in Italy, where I was accompanied by a rabid Bushie. (This was the infamous 2000 election.)
He was the best congressperson I have ever had, by far, and one of the few physicists to serve in Congress.
Later it was announced that he narrowly won, after absentee ballots were counted. It was his last close election.
He worked, before retiring from Congress, to assure free and fair elections free of electronic voting. Regrettably, he was largely ignored in this quest.
I was always proud of the thought that my vote was one of the few hundred that put him over the top in 2000. It was January before he was officially declared the winner.
