Being on call is tough, esp. as the years pile up. I sure couldn't do it now........

40 plus years of working call in hospitals sucks... When the money was good it was neat. When they started chipping away at the monetary rewards it just sucked...

about five years ago. This is the best job in the world if the phones go silent at five.

I still can't sleep more than 4 hours in a row and anytime the dog farts I am wide awake. I hope the transition is much easier for you!

... a guy your age

One day after your birthday and already you are complaining. I got 20 years on you and I bravely stood out in the cold this morning putting signs on my car so everyone along our way was a bit safer this morning.

I think everyone knows that, even if they don't want to admit it. Women live longer than men. That's science.

Computer programs seem to find a way to break at inconvenient times. At the start of my career, I'd get the 2:30 call and have to drive to work to fix the problem. Later, I could sit at my "work" computer at home, and generally fix the problem. Finally I retired.

Now, the 2:30am call is not from the boss, but from the bladder.

All in all, "not working" is better.

(I know, fixing things from your home computer is probably not possible for a physician. No virtual surgery for you.)
