Our younger daughter, as I posted a few months ago, just had her first child, is somehow managing to juggle being a new mama with her simultaneous life as a hotshot international attorney.
Now her elder sister has gotten engaged to her sweetheart. It was not an easy thing for him to ask her, as his mom considered him her property, and is not speaking to him since he told her. But he knew what a good partner he had found in our daughter. He even tried to call me to ask my permission (I was in a plane at the time, and so missed the call). How's THAT for old fashioned? I said that it would have been fine with me, but I was definitely NOT the one whose OK was needed for THAT question.
So the newly engaged couple zapped off to Japan for a couple of days to celebrate with some saké (I guess that's how people do it these days?):

I think I must be getting old, or something..........

At least they're all within a small radius.............

Either Edinburgh or the Cotswolds would be nice

(54,329 posts)My wife and I have never been to Scotland, even though it's just a 90 minute flight from us. However, our daughter (the one now engaged) has been there, and she said Edinburgh was one of her favorite cities. It's now on our list of "close by, but never found the time to go there" places. People always tell us, "WHAT? You've never been to (their favorite getaway)??? Are you crazy? you MUST go there!!" So, we have added Edinburgh. We've been to places halfway around the world, but never to a few places that are a two hour flight from here (e.g. Rome, Venice, Ireland, Kraków).
I know, I know...we'll get around to it one of these years.

It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door," he used to say. "You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to."

(54,329 posts)But we all gotta grow up sometime. And parents all gotta let go some time.
He did, and she will. Nothing a grandchild or two in the neighborhood (she also lives in NYC) won't cure, I suspect.

(54,329 posts)He has been good for her. She was always serious at work, always survived firing purges during difficult times. But she liked to party around. She still does, but she now also goes on weekend trip to Washington to visit museums, and quick trips to Japan (!!!!!JAPAN??) for a brief culture shock. He's taking her from "woman of the world" to "worldly woman," and we all love it, including her!

(54,329 posts)I think she'll melt when she gets the chance to hold her first grandchild in her hands. If not, that's one ice berg that will have to remain frozen for eternity. At least her son was smart enough to know that his own life couldn't be tethered to hers forever. Actually, he's pretty smart, period. Born in Russia, lived in Israel for a while (not completely Jewish, if I got the ethnicities right) but not religious anyway (thank goodness!). As an immigrant to the USA, breezed through Columbia University in 3 years, just got his green card, so no worries on that front.

Our daughters have inherited my wife's tendency to look younger than they are (the one in the photo is 35). About ten years ago, my daughter and I were invited to attend some event at the Amsterdam trade fair grounds in RAI. Amsterdam is just 3 hours from Düsseldorf, and she was going to be here in Europe that day, so we accepted.
While there, we got approached by a Dutch TV team asking to interview us, saying they were doing a report on pretty young women with much older husbands. We explained that we were not married. The TV interviewer said that was OK, the report covered pretty young women with much older boyfriends, too. I said she's not my girlfriend, either. They looked at the way she was hanging on my arm, not believing a word of it, probably thinking I had a wife somewhere that would divorce me if she "found out" from a TV segment about my little fling on the side. I finally explained, in Dutch, that she was my daughter. My daughter then confirmed it in both English and German. The TV team then said that if THAT was the case, then they couldn't use us for their segment, and left to look for a more suitable couple, but we were both pretty sure they didn't believe a word of what we told them, but instead were scared of being "caught."
