Has anyone bought one of these foam mattresses sold online that seem to be the rage?

I'm in the market for a new King size, and have been looking at the foam style that are sent in a shrink wrap package to your house. There seems to be a new manufacturer appearing all the time, but the one I have honed on on is the "Helix", primarily because of all the various ones I've looked at online, they allow you to specify your weight, height, sleep style (back, side, etc.) and whether or not you tend to sleep hot or cold and want a cooling or warming mattress.

Anyway....

Anyone else looked into these? Bought one? If so, how do you like it?

I'm prepared to spend a grand or so on one of these, but damn, another one comes out of the woodwork every few days!

1. Sleeps HOT

We ended up replacing it after a while it was so hot. We have another one from a mother place and I think it is way better but wife still thinks it's hot

6. The first one

Was from on line, it came in a box and you open it and it expands out and you let it sit a while to finish. Maybe Amazon or something. The newer one is temper pedic from a place local.

5. Looked at Casper.

Not ruling any of them out.

I drive a tractor trailer over the road so I spend as much time in a small sleeper bunk as I do in my bed at home.

I just want something really nice that isn't five grand!

3. I have looked at them too

My concern is how long would they last. We have a European Sleep Works mattress (that really needs to be replaced!) and we have had it for 17 years! The Casper ones are guaranteed for one year, but they don't break down that fast.

7. 17 is a wee bit long in the tooth!

The one I'm sleeping on now - a Serta Perfect Sleeper or similar..hell...I don't know!....I bought back in 2007 but it has spent at least 5 of those years in storage.

It's a pillow top so I can't flip it and you can only rotate it so many times.

Anyway...time for a new one.

8. We bought one a few years ago from Costco (online).

The one we got is a super firm and very deep queen size (we *love* it!), and it also has some firmer wedges of foam along the edges to help it keep it's shape. It has several various layers with the top being slightly textured to allow some air flow and not be too hot in the summer.

If I remember, ours cost somewhere around $400 or less; we've been using it for over 6 years now, and there are no noticeable depressions where we normally sleep (not breaking down or compressing).

9. Do lots of research

this product will off-gas the chemicals used in manufacture. This site recommends going for higher quality, more expensive mattresses for lower chemical content. I cannot stress enough how important it is to go low chemical. The number of hours you spend breathing the air that comes off of these things is not inconsequential, especially if you have pre-existing respiratory issues, headaches, and allergies.

10. I completely agree and understand, but as I said above....,.

I drive trucks for a living and sleep in a sleeper close to 50% of my nights. Also, I am in a different truck almost every time I take one of those trips (just finished a Jax -> Detroit -> Pittsburgh --> Jax this morning as an example) so I sleep with smokers, windows down, etc.

I get what you are pointing out, truly, but it probably isn't as big an issue for me as it is for someone who sleeps in the same bed in the same spot every single night.

The reason I am asking this question in the first place is because there are so many options out there now, as opposed to how it was when I bought the mattress I am currently sleeping on.

Hell, it was more of a matter of ...how much can I afford plus how soft does this feel for the ten minutes I am going to lay on it! The answer back in 2007 was $650!

Now these companies are offering one year, no charge warranties, for fucks sake!

I have COPD. Came from 35 years of smoking. I haven't bought a pack since February and my last drag was the 2nd week of April. I don't want to breath in toxic air, no doubt.

So I am searching. And that's why I posted this question.

13. that looks good

as far as encasing the foam in the interior of the mattress. Yikes on the price though.

Even if you do not sleep on the mattress all the time, your COPD makes you more sensitive.

12. The firmness levels can be a problem.

I bought A Sleep Innovations years ago off Amazon, it was rated as Firm. In reality it was Extra-Firm, or Extra-Extra-Firm.

Also, to make sure you can remove the cover for washing. I found out after I received mine that if I did it would void the warranty.

14. We're saving up for a Ghostbed mattress...

They've been around for 25 years, made in America, are around 10" deep and have a latex top (so they sleep cool) and re-enforced sides and are rated for Bariatric (two sleepers, total of 800 lbs) on the Queen and Standard King beds. They're also not terribly expensive.

Not that we weigh that much together, but there's two grandkids living with us that will occasionally come in with nightmares that add 75 lbs and they also like to come in and bounce on the bed - and most memory foam/latex mattresses 1) don't have the re-enforced sides and 2) are typically rated for two sleepers at between 400 - 600 lbs total.
Reviews are generally good. The few bad reviews are typically based on the reviewer's personal preferences rather than the mattresses in general. On edit - most of the bad reviews complain the mattress is too firm - especially for lighter people.

It's critical to look at the weight rating as well as the reviews.

The Kids got a Purple on payments a couple years ago. It seems to work well enough for them, but as they've got it on the floor without a box spring, so they're still getting back issues trying to get in and out of bed. Might as well have gotten an air mattress.
We considered one, but the sides aren't re-enforced (so one's butt sinks the side and slides off if one has more than one cat or grandchild trying to join in at night) - and it's only got a 500 lb couple's rating and we need at least a 600 lb.

for a second bedroom. Was worried about it being too "hot", based on previous experience sleeping on a foam mattress -- but was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable (it's firm) and relatively cool it remained.

It's neat to watch it expand when you get it out of its container, but you might want to give it a day to finish outgassing before sleeping on it. A slight odor lingers after the first day, but it's gone another day or two later.

23. We have a Tuft & Needle Queen size.

Overall, we are quite satisfied.

It wasn't a magic cure for my arthritis, but I don't know that any bed could be.

It does not sleep any "hotter" than the traditional mattress we had before. (However, I am a hot sleeper to begin with, so I might not be the best judge. My husband sleeps like the dead and doesn't even know what "sleeping hot" means).

We have had it now for 2 years with no issues. The only difference that I think we have made through use is that there now seems to be a very soft layer on the surface of the mattress, but the overall firmness has not changed.

Our positive experience prompted my brother & his wife to buy three more Tuft & Needle mattresses. (One for their bedroom and two for their guestroom). They are also very satisfied.

One for my bed, a queen size, and one for my couch/guest bed that is a twin XL. I recommend them. I get much better sleep than I did on my old mattress.

I don't find it to sleep hot either.

24. Bought a Bavaria Mattress? Years ago...this was before...

..Tuft and Needle, The Purple Mattress, other gel foam, etc. The older traditional do sleep hot, but in cold winters, you don't mind it one bit...nor do the cats. Summer is a problem. We got two new twin mattresses to use in a cooler room with gel foam to use in the summer from Costco, works great.

Probably retire back to the mattress in our bedroom once colder weather appears....but it is getting to the point to be replaced. Most likely get a Tuft and Needle. It only fares slightly worse in reviews to "The Purple Mattress"...but its twice the price...probably due to their high profile marketing scheme. Would love a Sleep Number, but I don't have that kind of money to blow....maybe after I paid off the car, I could finance it.

25. We got a Tuft & Needle queen size a couple of years ago.

I loved it. Mrs GoS, who has scoliosis, found it pretty comfortable and that's saying a lot, as she always has difficulties with mattresses.

The price was great(free), because we were AirB&B superhosts and all that they asked was to write a review.

Not sure of the longevity, as we no longer have it. Gave it to a friend's daughter when we moved here to France 3 months ago.

A bed is always something I want to try out. I would never buy something like that over the computer if I could not 100% return it, shipping including. Companies like Zappos take things back and they even handle the shipping. Foam really varies in quality. I'd beware!

29. If you value the quality of your sleep, invest in a Sleep Number.

They are worth the money and is made in the U.S.A.

My son has been with this company since August of 2010. You have not slept if you have not slept on a Sleep Number bed. He runs the store here in Rochester.

37. After a week, you would know.

Sleep Number actually puts science into these beds. When you test them at a Sleep Number store, the contours of your body in relation to the spine, are very important to the quality of your sleep. My Chiropractic daughter has one and she would not sleep on any other bed. She recommends them to her patients. When she was pregnant with her second child, she bought one from her brother and her back was happy about that because she slept so well.
