At about 9AM this morning, our doggie Curly, my sweet little boy and best four legged friend for the nearly five years since he joined our family, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He had been sick, lethargic and very weak for about the past ten days. He'd lost his appetite, lost control of his bladder and had nearly no bodily strength for the last 2 or 3 days.
We kept hoping against hope that he would rally, but this morning it became clear that he was ready to move on. My wife, son and I took him to the vet. I held my loyal little friend from the time I got up this morning until we got to the animal hospital. As his life was ending, the last thing that Curly knew in this world was being held, caressed kissed and being told how much he is loved by his family. I was rubbing the fur on his head when the doctor told us that his brave little heart had stopped, and the three of us went through a LOT of tissues.
While I'm not very religious, I am very grateful to Pope Francis for his statement about a year ago that he believed that God has a place for such loving creatures as our pets, and I think of Curly in Doggie Heaven running with his doggie and kitty brothers and sisters chasing bunnies and eating biscuits, or as he knew them to be called, cookies.
Good night and goodbye my sweet boy. We miss you, we'll ALWAYS love you, and rides in the car just won't be the same without you. Thank you so much for being a such an important and vital and loving part of our family. Thank you for five years of being my best friend. Now go find Spencer, Daisy, Gretchen, Frisky, Butch, Spirit and Moe. As eternity is measured, it won't be that long before we're all together again!
I love my little boy!

(776 posts)Your tribute to Curly is beautiful. He was clearly very loved. This is all very resonant to me as I lost my best buddy, Roxie, just over a month ago. My broken heart goes out to you.

(10,565 posts)the next plane. I had to put down my beloved 16 year old Mr. B a few months back. I brought his body home from the vet and buried him back behind my garden. I planted an impatiens plant on his grave. It had one flower-today there are more flowers than I can count. Call me crazy or foolish but I believe he is telling me that all is well with his soul. I miss him terribly. My deepest condolences go to you.

(52,538 posts)I am sad for you, your family and poor Curly. My little girl is 15 and I am sad for myself too since I know we don't have much time left. When my other little girl passed away at home before Christmas 15 years ago her ghost was here for about a week. I never experienced anything like that before or since. I am an atheist and do not know what happens after you die but her ghost was very real and it was not spooky at all. I was told by someone who experienced the same thing that it happens sometimes when animals die at home.

(4,033 posts)For those of us lucky enough to love our furkids, they are part of our family! I've always said that when one of them leaves us, they take a piece of our heart with them. But as time passes we discover that even though the took a piece with them, they left a piece of their heart with us to replace it.
I haven't seen this posted lately:
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

(5,108 posts)All of us who are animal lovers know this time eventually will come. I've dealt with dogs, cats, and horses in this situation over the years. I'm not religious either, but have always felt the same as the Pope regarding our "loving pets." I wish I would have more faith in an afterlife, but I've never doubted, if it exists, that our animal companions will be thre as well.

(10,237 posts)He and Curly will rest with doggie Spencer and kitty Moe in our back yard by a statue of St. Francis of Assisi where we'll put a bench for us to rest on. I've told my wife that when I go I want a vial of my ashes to be put with my animal friends. She feels he same about hers.

I can't offer any words of life everlasting, but I know that your Curly is out of pain and must have had a wonderful life with you. So many dogs don't. (Damn. Tears are running down my face). Wishing you good memories of him and a calm spirit.
