Now I hate it and want to get rid of it. If I shave it....

A lot of guys ditch the beard in the summer because it's hot. Reason enough.

perhaps you should evaluate things a bit differently.
Just grow the beard snowflake.
(BTW, I've grown several beards in my life. Never got over the "itching" stage. Do what feels right.)
