Article about me in today's New York Times

Who Made My Puzzle?

Martin Ashwood-Smith (Crossword Constructor)

Q: Why do you do this to yourself?

A: Thatís a good question. And if I can come up with a good answer, Iíll let you know.

Seriously though, when my first submission to The New York Times had been accepted, I was bitten by ďthe bug.Ē I still have it. If you have a cure, please let me know.

2. Well done, Puzzler!

I have added a bookmark to remind myself to order your book from Barnes and Noble. I love crosswords, a habit I picked up from my father and grandfather, who were both very good at them. Thanks for sharing the article with us.

6. FYI: No Trump references, clues nor answers

will EVER appear in my crosswords!

Until heís safely behind bars, and then maybe

To be clear: my above statement is not official New York Times policy. Just my own.

Principles first, crosswords second!

(Sorry for the dose of politics in this particular forum, but I have been asked that question)

Thanks for the kind words

7. That's awesome.

I'm a Thursday minus/ Wednesday plus level NYT crossword guy.

I used to keep the Saturdays that I completed without cheating - but they got lost in a move and I switched to the online puzzles

I really appreciate your work. Thanks for all the frustration and all the satisfaction

14. I am an avid fan of the Sunday NYT puzzle which is delivered to me on Saturday.

So I get an early start. Once I get the theme figured out based on the title of the puzzle -- IF I get it figured out -- I can make progress. I really work on it, too. I also consult google about certain names, which I call "research" and my husband calls "cheating."

15. Congrats Martin!

I recognize you from Rex's blog. It's kind of surreal to see you here under a different name, but quite cool!!

I'm a fledgling constructor myself - one published NYT puzzle (two years ago, after 15+ rejections). I am always in awe of the constructors like you who can consistently produce such high quality puzzles.

I hope you don't mind if I toot your horn a little, because I'm not sure the article makes this clear, but Puzzler has had over 80 puzzles published in the New York Times! Take it from someone who busted his @ss for a year to make ONE (1) acceptable puzzle, this is an amazing feat!!

Congrats again!

23. Cool! I've probably done lots of your puzzles.

I still miss Eugene T. Maleska and his elegant way of editing the clues. I have arguments in my head with Will Shortz all the time. "The Terps are NOT an ACC powerhouse" (back when they were in the ACC, but were certainly not a powerhouse). "Eugene T. would have pointed out it was supposed to be a nickname!" "A "seamer" is NOT a common profession!" and so on, but I still do the puzzles anyway.....

Good for you!

for purely "medicinal" purposes (kind of like the 25 year old single malt hiding behind the bookcase), because my doctor says that doing crosswords is great exercise for the brain and keeps the mind active.

I was wondering who was responsible for my terrible migraines and acid reflux, IT'S YOU!

Actually I've been doing crosswords for almost 50 years now. I do them in ink. They're no longer the mind numbing exercises in futility they once were. I hope that doesn't upset you.

but Iím just one of many.

There are a lot of women and men who contribute crosswords to the NYT.

If you click on this NYT Crossword Info site you can see many of the people behind the puzzles (and statistics) over the last few decades:

(Watch out for spoilers if you havenít solved some of the puzzles!)
