Johnny Weir is the coolest cat in the USA.

Only a genuine American star dresses like and carries themselves the way Johnny Weir does. That hair, that suit, that watch! It's been so long since anybody has gotten it right though Bruno Mars comes pretty close.

Elvis and Little Richard think the man has swagger and style! He probably drives a pink Caddy too. Kudos Johnny Weir, you are the man!

I've never watched reality tv but if those 2 had a show it would be my favorite show.

7. Who is Johnny Weir?

Oh! And association with the ever talentless and tasteless Elvis is not a good mention for me.

Now, Little Richard is closer to my taste.

Still. I never heard of Johnny Weir, until tonight.

Oh! Now I get it! He's very cool! (All except the putative Elvis part.)
Google's my friend.

No NBC TV stations in rural west Michigan. So no Olympics for me.
(BTW, no cable TV here either.)

9. Takes some guts to call Elvis tasteless and talentless.

He wasnít to my taste but he did his thing well til he fell to the thing so many fall to, age and drugs and belief in his own PR. There was something bigger than life for that era and thatís important.

15. Sorry. Could never stand him.

And I was born in the late forties, so I knew him throughout his career. Not that I am an authority. This is my personal opinion.

People still call him "The King". The king of what? Derivative songs? Greasy hair? Tasteless, overly opulent style? Wavering vocals.

Sorry, my friend. He just wasn't my style. Others may disagree. And that's okay.

I like Mozartian opera. That can't be everybody's taste either.

My best to you, nolabear.

20. I didnt love him either except for King Creole

which is a work of very special genius. But Iím partial.

There are lots of opera aficionados among my friends, but Iíve only been to four or five. I really like American opera though that might reveal what a peasant I am. Susannah is a favorite.

I wonít argue with you about Little Richard, though. He is something beyond.

24. We should do an opera / classical music thread sometime.

I like 1812 Overture and William Tell Overture. Rousing music that can send a person on an emotional rollarcoaster. Would love to expand my knowledge and appreciation in those genres.

28. My best to you, nolabear.

Try Tosca some time. Yes, it's in Italian. But, you know when it's over because it ends when the last major character is dead. Of course, it's Tosca herself. She pitches herself off a parapet of the Castle S'ant Angelo in Rome, putatively into the Tiber, although that's never stated. In the second act, she murders a bad guy with a fucking butter knife. He's kind of the Sheriff of Rome, Scarpia, who's trying to molest her. She plunges it into his heart singing, "This is Tosca's kiss." Such passion in this story.

It just doesn't get better than that. Plus, as it's Puccini, the music is lucious.

And yup, Little Richard is also something very special.

I will leave you with a quote about music.

If the music sounds good, it is good.
Duke Ellington

Have a heart, my friend.

Short version is that I am a big fan of both.

At least we both agree that Johnny Weir is one cool cat!

19. Well, first of all, Elvis is dead. So he doesn't drive anything.

Unless we are talking about different Elvis's.

I'm writing about the dead one, although I don't know of many others, if any.

That's fine with me.

I finally caught that.

I'm a bit slow tonight. Just finished two hours of Columbo on the Televisionary Machine. That's enough to wear out an old dude like me any day.

Oh! Just one more thing...

Thanks for the thoughtful colloquy.

30. Alas, No NBC here. The closest station shut down when everybody went digital.

And my roof antenna doesn't pull in any alternatives. CBS, ABC, PBS x 2, and yes, I get METV x 2.

Also, Justice Network, and the new Quest network on sub channels. Justice is so-so, lots of police procedurals. Quest does some history, which can be nice.

Sadly, no cable TV available here in the national forest areas.

My Inet is via cellular net. Download limits! Thankfully DU is very, very efficient.

8. Tara and Johnny did a funny ad together

They are in the backstage dressing area, and Tara brings him a red dress for herself, says, "How about this one?" He says, "you've worn that already." They argue until he shows her a cellphone pic of her wearing the dress as a commenter. She huffs away, and he says something funny like, "You're welcome!" And then, "Did it get chilly in here?"

I don't think I have his reply exactly right, but I couldn't find it on YouTube.

I watch skating so I can see and hear them together. They are happy, confidant people.

12. What I like is they are both so knowledgeable on skating

Tara and Johnny have interesting comments on every skater and performance. They're prepared - not just filling the airwaves with chatter. Yes they're sometimes funny, but they treat the sport with high regard too. They're respectful towards the skaters and coaches. I think they're great and I hope this will be a regular gig for them.

He's doing a good job and Tara too. I was glad to see Scott Hamilton last night two for a few minutes but I was at a restaurant and far away and couldn't hear him. I hope to see him commenting too. I always enjoyed his enthusiasm and comments about the skaters/skating.
