(42,083 posts)The most likely cause was something he ate.

(42,083 posts)he stopped eating and drinking and was really lethargic. Part of me wants to blame my parents for not listening to me/not going to the vets sooner.

(101,730 posts)As one who has lost their share of beloved dogs and cats, I can really appreciate the loss. I hope when you have had a chance to grieve (as well as to celebrate the life of your dear Scoutie), you will come to a point where you might offer a loving home to another.

(42,083 posts)We only had him for about a year or two.

(101,730 posts)where I won't encounter too many people if I feel like crying... A few weeks of those long walks can go a long way toward healing. I also carried a little lock of my last pup's hair with me in a little locket on those walks. Made me feel like my sweet "guardian angel" was still there with me.
May happier memories move to the forefront.

(23,820 posts)And much too short a time together. I have had some cats who were only with us for 2-3 years, and one who made it to 20. I grieved them all.
You sound like me, in that you are already looking for a successor. I know everyone is different, but for me, the only balm to the sorrow of a departed kitty is to find a new one ASAP. It kind of feels as if the love for the cat who has left is just floating around with no one to attach to and needs a new anchor.
Our vet once told me that it was in no way disrespectful to bring a new critter into your life soon after losing one - he said it was the best way to honor the departed friend by offering your loving home to someone else who needs one.
You will know the right one when you find each other.
