(2,869 posts)or puffed rice with LOTS of sugar, Captain Crunch and Raisin Brand. Oh where, Oh where did my teeth go !

(204,779 posts)And we usually had hot cereal before school, but we put plenty of sugar on that, as well. These days, it would probably be Raisin Bran, and the raisins make it sweet enough for me.

(25,816 posts)My childhood was more than a half century ago, so I don't remember a lot of details. I do seem to recall adding sugar to Frosted Flakes.
Once I had kids of my own, I became something of a Food Nazi. No pre-sweetened cereals. Cheerios and other bland cereals, and to be honest the only reason I gave them cereal was because they didn't like a cooked breakfast. One son literally gagged on eggs. The other simply wasn't hungry the first three or four hours he was up.

(23,159 posts)Usually Cheerios, Raisin Bran, or Shredded Wheat. When I got to college, I went on a Froot Loops binge(!) because it was the only cereal in the cafeteria that didn't gag me. They gave out the one-serving boxes, and I always took extras. At one point I had a stack of 655 single-serving Froot Loops boxes in my dorm room; my roommate finally made me pack 'em up, but while I had 'em, I was eating sometimes four boxes a day for snacks, plus a couple for breakfast in the cafeteria! But I think I've only eaten Froot Loops maybe a couple of times since graduating.

(118,498 posts)Get the mini box set variety pack and all of us kids would go for the one package of fruit loops. I bought fruit loopsw a few times as an adult. My favourite great aunt admitted when she was 90 that she had a box of captain crunch in her kitchen for treats and of course that inspired me. Mom allowed only raisin bran or rice crispies in the house normally.

The only one I have eaten as an adult has been Raisin Bran and that was only one box. My wife did not grow up with cereal and refuses to consider buying it.

(9,257 posts)Anybody remember this? So good! Had kind of a malt taste. This was a healthy cereal and we would kill the box in 2 days. Of course they stopped making it even though you'd think there would be a market for it now.

My mom spoiled us. We had an array of sweet cereals at our house. When a new on came out, she would buy it. I was in high school when Fruity Pebbles came out. I loved drinking the fruity milk in the bowl.

(55,004 posts)Now I know why.
I can't stand cold cereal with milk, can eat the candy versions dry if somebody buys it, but I never do. Ruin your upper palate with Capn Crunch - did it have glass in it? WTF? Coco Pebbles and Puffs, Frosted Flakes, Apple Jacks, Life, Fruit Loops. The zoo used to have fruit loops in gum machines to feed the animals - that is how old I am.

(5,810 posts)But once in a while my mom would buy the multipack of individual boxes of cereal. What a thrill! One time when my sister and I were with our mother shopping for groceries at either Kroger or the A&P, we begged her to buy Cocoa Puffs. We nagged her for aisle after aisle until she relented but only if we promised to eat it. Of course, we did! We got it home, filled a big bowl, sat down to eat it and were in for the disappointment of our young lives.
Instead of the wonderful chocolatey taste we were told wed get, we got a weak cocoa taste that was more than a little weird and it turned the milk a kind of purple color. Blick. I think we never begged her for a certain cereal again. Well, until Captain Crunch came along.

(17,255 posts)still carry over into my adulthood. Only the ones that have been discontinued are ones that I don't buy anymore.
Still eat Cocoa Puffs, Frosted Flakes and Sugar Crisp/Golden Crisp.
I don't mind the taste of Cap'n Crunch but it tears apart the inside of my mouth and sticks in my teeth.
Although I enjoy cinnamon in many things, I do not care for sugary cinnamon cereals.

(27,775 posts)But the best tasting breakfast cereal I ever had was called Kellogg's Concentrate.
It came in a little gold box.
It didn't last long, they only made it from 1959 to 1965.

(4,492 posts)I wasn't allowed sweet cereals by my parents. BUt my grandfather and stepgrandmother always got them for us when we visited.
Both my sister and I spoke about Lucky Charms at my grandfather's funeral.

(15,374 posts)The Monster Cereals - at least, Frankenberry and Count Chocula were sold year round in stores where I lived as a kid. Every now an then, you could find Boo Berry, and that was always a good day.
These days, Frankenberry and Chocula and Boo Berry are only sold around Halloween. I'll normally buy a box of each and have them for snacks, saving Boo Berry for last.

(935 posts)I can't find any of these advertisements on YouTube, but this is the first memory I have of being influenced by advertising. I used to run around the house pretending to be some kind of vehicle that was the Malt-O-Meal mobile. Most days, the cereal was cold, but some days we got Malt-O-Meal hot cereal!
