(38,545 posts)Disco, for the most part, was a producers medium. Song writing and musicianship didn't factor in much. So to listen to it was pointless.
But if you want to "Shake Your Bootie," it was great fun.

(1,474 posts)was really a fairly big deal in late 70's. I liked Blondie and had friend berate me because she was Disco.
I was more on the rocker side. But, good music is good music. I have never seen Saturday Night Fever nor do I want to.
Was a silly thing to care about.

(20,165 posts)Not just because of the dancing and music.
On what planet was Blondie disco? They were punk and new wave.

(1,474 posts)Heart of Glass was often called her Disco Song. It had a strong 4/4 beat.
Saturday Night Fever is, I am sure, a good movie. I was still stuck on Travolta being on Welcome Back Cotter. Perhaps I will watch it someday. I am a nerd and really like documentaries best.

(7,947 posts)An unexpectedly good mix.
And Saturday Night Fever is a good film. There's this funny subplot about John Travolta's older "perfect" brother, who became a priest, thereby fulfilling their mother's dream-- she calls him "Father Frank Junior"-- and the priest is thinking of leaving the priesthood, and has John Travolta and his buddies take him to discos. It's poignant and funny.

(1,474 posts)I probably should watch it and may. I really like shows about Cambrian Explosion or Quantum Mechanics. I am a hardcore nerd and even worse, am proud of it. Blondie did great music. I still listen to her quite often. I do like comedy movies though. Thanks for your input.

(7,947 posts)In the actual disco era, I thought it was processed, shrill, boring. (Compared to punk, Springsteen, etc of the same era.)
Now it sounds pretty good. Donna Summers was wonderful.
The techno dance music, that heavy bass beat and the awful repetition ("Well, if you're on Ecstasy, it's great!" now, sounds primitive and stupid in comparison.
Donna Summer really is great--
And you know, "Hot Stuff" would be a great song to play at my funeral.

To me, Disco not only has a great dance beat, but it's full of fun and excitement. A really exubeeant "let's party" vibe.

(1,634 posts)I was a kid coming up in Queens, NY during the birth of disco.. Loved it in the beginning, it was a cool sound on the streets. It was played at the barbecues and block parties. That was our "rap". When it caught fire, it got WAY too commercial for my taste. I moved on and fell in love with funk.
These were some of my favorites.
We Cha' Cha'd our asses off this one..
Couldn't play this around my parents. This was the cut.
This one brought the house down.
This was a jazz/disco favorite
Anything by Chic.. they had a funk vibe. Loved the Bee Gees, Rose Royce, Taste of Honey....

Small town, pop. 4,000. Disco lessons in the high school gym with my new wife.
One (there were only 3) of the 'night clubs' even had a stainless steel dance floor there in that tiny town.
With fog machines and disco balls.
OMG
Thanks for the memories.
Meanwhile...Watergate.
Gas prices tripled in one of those years.
Four 24/7 lumber mills laid off workers down to 1 1/2 shifts due to interest rates killing the housing market.
But the stainless steel floor beckoned.

(18,837 posts)It was still sort of hanging on by a thread when Van Halen's "Eruption / You Really Got Me" started blasting out of radios across the USA. It was then that I realized how much I wanted disco to GO AWAY and rock and roll to COME BACK.
It stopped growing, it was endless repetition, and things like the abominable "Sgt. Peppers" movie with Frampton and the Bee Gees only deepened my thirst for rock and roll.
Decades later, I see it as a goof, something fun, mainly because I can listen to it whenever I'm in the mood, rather than hearing it everywhere music is played.

Old hippie rock n rollers.
However, the kids there were having the time of their life. It was colorful, energized, and downright fun. They danced and dressed to one up each other.
Dancing makes people thirsty and hungry.
Everyone came out winners. Whats not to like???
