(7,947 posts)It looks good, and I know that I'll spend the whole time thinking, "Boy, this guy Churchill has nothing on Trump!" <G>
I'm wondering how Gary Oldman is. He's in a long line of good Churchills.

(9,352 posts)By the end of the movie had a problem with the makeup for Churchill. Looked way too waxy and fake.
I know this was a tour de force for Oldman but.....

(16,722 posts)But I highly reccommend the Churchill War Rooms when in London. That is the underground bunker complex beneath the streets, just blocks away from 10 Downing Street, where Winston Churchill and his wife, members of his war cabinet spent WWII. It is an amazing place.
My husband and I are planning another England trip in 2018. He wants to go back and spend several more hours there. I will head East on Westminster Bridge to the Florence Nightingale Museum. Then we will meet up at the Halls of Parliment afterwards.

(40,416 posts)But I am very familiar with the history of the time, Churchill's speeches, and have read all seven volumes of Churchill's History of World War II. He was a helluva writer.
I fear that Hollywood will screw up the history which is a matter of rather public record, and I don't necessarily mean Churchill's account.
I remain a huge Churchill fan. He was quite a character. I don't think the U.K. makes it in WWII without him.

(63,889 posts)I saw "Darkest Hour" with my dtr and her husband and we went back to their house and watched "Dunkirk." "Darkest Hour" gave you the political situation and "Dunkirk" gave you the actual result of the political decision.
I would recommend to anyone to get "Atonement" on youtube.com and see that film to fill in a very sad but realistic novelistic account of the situation.
"Darkest Hour" is very well acted and Oldman will probably get an Oscar for his portrayal. His wife, Clemmie, portrayed by Kirsten Scott Thomas, was fabulous as was the young woman playing Churchill's typist/secretary, who has to endure his heavy drinking (one bottle of champagne at lunch alone!).

(23,726 posts)It offered glimpses of Churchill that I didn't know about and also all the political jockeying that went around Churchill's was positions

(8,012 posts)I thought the movie was amazing as it focused on that one particular period of time (I think it was just around a month in May, 1940) that basically determined the direction of the whole damn war or as one of the reviews states, "Changed the course of world history." Wow! I was COMPLETELY blown away by Gary Oldman's performance. And I REALLY wish I'd seen Dunkirk first but now I'll HAVE to see it however I can. In my opinion, this movie is a MUST SEE ....
