We're in Florida, it's 55 degrees and the streets are bare.

We are experiencing the first snowstorm of winter 2017/2018. Currently the only car tracks in the snow were made by the postal delivery truck.

It doesn't really ever get cold enough to be a deal-breaker here in Southeast Los Angeles County.

34 and snow 'showers' here now. Staying inside until after snow ends. Hope to walk around without getting shoes/boots feet wet tomorrow, when sun will return and temps rise to around 40.

(115,669 posts)but if it's below about 10F and windy I might wear a hat, which I usually hate to do because I look like a dork. If it's below zero I'll zip the lining into my windbreaker.
Thor_MN
(11,843 posts)Three miles in subzero temps means wearing a hat. The colder, the more layers below a windbreaker. Often, I will have frost inside the windbreaker when I get back.
Colder is easier in some cases, I walked the other day at 27 degrees and it was super slick. Several slips that I managed to recover with an arm flail or two, but one caused me to do a shoulder roll. Fortunately, that was on a trail in the woods with no one around to see me go ass over tea kettle. No lingering damage except to my ego.

(990 posts)Has to be mighty cold, i.e. minus 25 or so wind for me to say no to Zeus Dog walk. Truth be told he doesn't care those low wind chill temps either. Life goes on in the cold.
But that being said, it is 29 and snowing and I just happily spent a couple of hours on the couch binge watching Grace and Frankie, snuggled in a quilt, knitting in my hands, coffee on the side table.
Soon I will bundle up, take Zeus for a walk, and then get ready to head over to the high school for a band concert dress rehearsal. Boston Brass is joining our community band in concert. Really looking forward to the concert tomorrow. However I will admit going out tonight does not thrill me much.

For me > 108
< 20
It rarely gets above 105 around here and rarely below 20. A few years ago, it was 111 and just going in my shady backyard was awful.
Around 105, just going grocery shopping is miserable.
If it gets below 20 it is almost always between 3 am and 7 am and by 9 am it is usually 40.
Now, I hate exercising in anything over 80, but I do it anyway. I usually give up if the daily high is 104 degrees, but I've done it and survived, but it seems like I end up fighting the heat more than anything.
Windchill can make temps in the 40s seem just as bad as in the 20s with no windchill.

(31,382 posts)because Snowy, my rescue dog, always needs walking several times a day. Doesn't matter whether it's 9 or 99 degrees--and we've had that range--she still needs her walks. She's always been a runner so she can't just be let out and no fenced yard. So no temp and no weather has kept me from going out although I do try to time her outings to avoid thunderstorms. Radar maps are really helpful for that in the summer.

(4,429 posts)I'm trying to train him to just go a few feet into the front yard (when the snow/weather is too bad). I'm in VT - and when he pulls - I go flying.
Not too long ago, he took me on a 'Nantucket Sleigh Ride' - it was dark and he smelled an animal (turned out to be a skunk). I took one step off the first step at my front door.............and off he went. When all was said and done, I was on the ground..........still holding the leash
mnhtnbb
(31,382 posts)The only times I have let Snowy go off leash have been when we are iced in. With a hip replacement, I don't need to fall on ice. Last year
we were iced in (on our dead end road) for 5 days. I let her go off leash and I went out with her. She loved it. Didn't run away and eventually
came in with me. There were no cars on the road, so I felt it was safe.
That was last year. I recently separated from my husband and Snowy is now with me at the beach. Don't expect any snow/ice here.
When we leave here we're probably going to a high rise apartment building in March. It remains to be seen what happens next winter
if we get ice. Don't know what I'll do in that situation.

(4,429 posts)I smacked my face on the pavement (so that was pretty ugly). But he's so strong, and I was unprepared. We have a large backyard, but we also live on a main road. Had I let go, he wouldn't have been safe at all. So, I held on!! I hope he appreciates it......

(22,250 posts)If it sleets/snows I am not going out because no one knows how to drive on that stuff
I am much more inclined to make excuses to stay in when it is 100+ which can sometimes last for weeks.
We will be moving to Arizona in a couple of years, so there will be no reason for a cold weather number but I can see hibernating from May to October!

(10,952 posts)In hot weather I am up and out before the crack of dawn to walk my furbaby because that is the only time of day I can guarantee her a walk. I really don't like going below 32 degrees but sometimes she gets really bossy and, like a well trained pet I at least try to give her a short walk.

(31,464 posts)We went snowboarding on a -6° day, with 35mph winds at the summit. That's about -60° under the old wind chill formula, or -36° using the new formula. Either way, that's how I determined how cold is too cold.

(17,615 posts)..its been 22 degrees all week long and socked in fog. The forest trees are white..not snow but covered in hoar frost. I haven't seen a ray of sun in over a week.I cant stay warm in the house and I'm damned sure not gonna go outside to feed the trout in the pond. They are pretty slow today anyway.
I'm huddling under a blanket with my 4 dogs reading DU and watching Gunsmoke. At 4:00 I will roll a J and wander downstairs with the dogs where it will be 10 degrees warmer or cooler depending on if the thermostat on the propane stove works right. But mostly it feels cooler as I can see the dark, cold, white and foggy outdoors. I live in a canyon so the sun goes down at 2:30. I will mix a Paloma, smoke the J and watch Wagon Train on the breakfast bar tv.
The Xmas tree lights are on inside and out and candles lit. I'm all for ambiance. All 4 dogs have been fed and pottied ( HURRY UP AND DO YOUR BUSINESS ITS COLD!) so whatever I have scrounged up for dinner I have to share with them.
Its too cold to go out and get the mail and even tho ALEXA has told me I have a package I will have hubby grab the mail and any boxes that have been delivered to our box waaaaaay up on the road. He gets home at 8..by then I'm under a blanket asleep.
So I've not been outside for the last few days and probably wont go out the next few days. I may have to bundle up in my sheep fur lined western duster, shake the mouse poop out of my sorrels and walk down to the pond to feed those danged fish.
Or not.

(54,338 posts)We have the Rhein to mitigate the worst of the cold. A few hours east of here in Berlin, it gets brutal. Down south in the Alps, too, but they're used to it down there.
It would have to go below -10° C (about 14° F) here before we become hermits.

(48,966 posts)And I tend to make decisions about how bearable it is outdoors based more on wind chill and heat index than simple temperature. I try not to go out if the wind chill is single digits or below zero, or if the heat index is close to 100 or above. Ideal outdoor temps for me are 55-75.
