And then there is Jim Croce. I was so busy listening to Progressive and Acid-Rock in the early to

mid 1970's I totally overlooked him. When he was killed I thought that is terrible but to me he was one of those Folk-Rock Artists that I had no interest in at all. What a lost talent, but I do remember "Time In a Bottle" being our Prom Theme song in 1974 and admit I did like that song. Unknown to my fellow Hard Rock-Progressive Rock loving friends, I did like Cat Stevens alot. God forbid they ever found that out!! There was a big difference listening to and worshipping Syd Barrett's solo works which are a world apart compared to Jim Croce and Cat Stevens. What category was Syd in would you say?

...to invoke the power of egregious understatement for a moment. David Bowie predicted that Pink Floyd would go absolutely nowhere without him and lotsa people were really pissed of that they continued using the moniker at all. I recently read a book written from that perspective that actually referred to Syd-less Floyd as "the appallingly insipid Waters-Wright-Gilmour-Mason."

Ultimately Syd's own long shadow would prove to be as great or even greater a contribution to music than his actual body of work... Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall all fall beneath that shadow to varying extents.

Then there's guys like Robyn Hitchcock who are likely to be the closest we'll ever get to Syd-minus-mental-illness-LSD-crash...

to that album and The Madcap Laughs when they released them together in Nov. of 1974. I use to lay in bed on a cold winter night with the turntable arm up so it would play over and over till I fell asleep. Terrapin, Octopus, Its No Good Trying, Late Night, Love Song, Gigolo Aunt, Baby Lemonade,Golden Hair..etc etc till my Mother would yell "That's enough turn it off and go to bed". Oddly she did often ask me to put on that "Bike" song which she loved. She would say "That is the best song that Pink Floyd guy ever wrote".
