(12,712 posts)Trump started the whole thing off by "priming" his audience with the idea of "fake news" repeated over and over again.
That allowed him to take precedence over the media itself and pick and choose as he saw fit with him being the sole arbitrator.
Priming and the illusion of truth, (repetition/familiarity) are powerful tactics and he knew that from the start.

First appeal to their prejudices, then you've got their minds to follow whatever bullshit you want to feed them.
Rachel Maddow's book Blowout explains that gaining & keeping control of oil and the Fossil Fuel industry in general is the motivation for controlling the message and minds - an easy job given America's gullible population. They already believe things without evidence.

(2,021 posts)I retired six years ago after 45 years working for a newspaper. We had -- and that newspaper still has -- strict policies regarding fact checking and accuracy checking and other ways to make SURE that what we were putting in print is true.
But nowadays, there are entirely too many "news" organizations whose purpose is not to inform and educate the public, but to keep a portion of the public told just what they want to hear. Fox "News" established that precedent, and now those other entities Mr. Stelter speaks of are carrying that to whole new levels of propaganda. It's downright Orwellian.
I hope the Biden administration will recognize this serious problem and address it in some way. Perhaps re-instituting the fairness doctrine or something like it will be a good start.
