McCarthyism: 'Have You No Sense Of Decency, Sir?'

Last edited Tue Nov 19, 2019, 09:37 PM - Edit history (4)

Joseph Welch, chief counsel for the U.S. Army, tires of Sen. Joseph McCarthy's (R-WI) accusations and innuendo regarding Communist infiltration at the televised Army-McCarthy Hearings in WDC, June 9, 1954. Roy Cohn, attorney for McCarthy shakes his head. Army- McCarthy Hearings, Senate hearing derived from Senator Joseph McCarthy's hunt for communists in US, April–June, 1954, Washington DC. Participants, The two sides of the hearing: US Army (accusing their opponents of blackmail), Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn and G. David Schine (accusing the Army of communism). Result: End of the McCarthy Era. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army%E2%80%93McCarthy_hearings

The angriest clash of the 30-days-long Army-McCarthy hearings came June 9, 1954, when Army counsel Joseph N. Welch (left) denounced Sen. Joseph McCarthy as a “cruelly reckless character assassin.” McCarthy is shown testifying on Communist Party organization with the aid of a huge map of the United States.

1. One of my favorite videos of all time.

I covered McCarthy when I taught The Crucible.

2. That's excellent material to combine, compare & contrast. Come

to think of it I've never noticed a production of 'The Crucible' and I've seen a lot of plays esp. since family was in acting.

The impact of McCarthyism on Hollywood was major, maybe I'll look for a video to post. Plenty of complications though with Kazan and Miller esp. for his treatment of MM.

4. I also used part of a video entitled "When TV Was Young" with Charles Kuralt from 1977.

It had an entire section with Edward R Murrow, McCarthy, Red Channels, etc. I believe it also covered Lucille Ball being a member of the Communist Party and being investigated by HUAC. If you google the title it’s online, divided into about 4 parts. Also an entertaining look at vintage tv programs.

5. There's a good movie version of The Crucible with Daniel Day Lewis.

As the community is cheering on the hangings of the witches I can’t help but think of a trump rally.

6. Yes I don't know how I missed that 1990s production and I'd

forgot about Lucille Ball and those times.

We certainly have the mob ethos visible and hard at work now.

3. And the GOPee hasn't changed one bit

On the contrary: if anything, all the Wall Street and Big Business support has made them all that much more arrogant.

7. Today if someone asked a congressional republican, "Have You No Sense Of Decency, Sir?"

The response would be, "No, why do you ask?"
