(16,117 posts)Gideon Levy may be the most hated man in Israel, or the most heroic, but the controversial Haaretz columnist has a dream. Recently, he expressed his enthusiasm for turning Israel into one just state for two peoples.
Such a state would have a legislature that would reflect the mosaic of the country, and an elected government formed by a coalition of the communities and the two peoples representatives. Yes, a Jewish prime minister with an Arab deputy, or vice versa.
Levys Utopian state of all its citizens will replace Zionism with something infinitely more just and sustainable. In his dream, the lion will lie down with the lamb and all threats will dissipate. Foreign aid will flood into this cross-confessional nirvana.
Levys solution has already been tried. It has failed. Lebanon was a mosaic state, but following a bloody civil war, it is little more than a precarious collection of quarreling sects on the edge of another precipice. The Maronite Christians have become a beleaguered minority, prefiguring what will happen to the Jews of Israel. Who said the definition of insanity is proposing the same solution but expecting different results every time?
Been there for 14 centuries, done that, got the blood-stained T-shirt.
To all intents and purposes, the Arab world is now judenrein. The fewer the Jews in the Arab world, the greater the Jew-hatred.
Israel is far from perfect, but no Arab state is remotely comparable. In Israel, minorities enjoy equal status before the law, strenuous strides are being taken to fight social discrimination and prejudice. By contrast, the Arab world s record for tolerance and pluralism is disastrous.

(16,117 posts)Gideon Levy hates Jews living in the West Bank. He hates them so much that he feels no sympathy for them when they are murdered by Palestinian terrorists. He even blames them for their own murder. He made this perfectly clear in an article published in Haaretz five days after a newborn baby died after being shot in his mothers womb in a drive-by shooting by a Palestinian terrorist. In the piece, Levy declared that Jews living in the West Bank brought it on themselves.
They brought it on themselves is a point that Levy drives home relentlessly in the piece, titled, I Feel No Sympathy for the Settlers. Just to eliminate any uncertainty over how much contempt Levy has for Jews living in the West Bank, the article is illustrated with a picture of the baby, Amiad Israel, being held by a mourner at his funeral. This is how bad it has gotten: Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, used an image of a dead infant Jew to illustrate an article affirming Jewish villainy. The mind reels.
In the piece, Levy says that he feels no compassion or solidarity with Jews living in the West Bank. even when they are murdered. Their tragedy isnt ours, Levy writes, because theyve brought the tragedy on themselves and their entire country.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Fred Maroun is a Canadian of Arab origin who lived in Lebanon until 1984, including during 10 years of civil war. Fred supports Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, and he supports a liberal and democratic Middle East where all religions and nationalities, including Palestinians, can co-exist in peace with each other and with Israel, and where human rights are respected. Fred is an atheist, a social liberal, and an advocate of equal rights.Haaretz columnist Gideon Levy accuses Israel of power drunkenness that fuels what he calls its crimes and whims. He claims that if Israel werent so strong too strong, its conduct would be more moral and more considerate. But if anyone in Israel is drunk on power, it is Levy himself. Levys column is a collection of easily refutable lies and half-truths, apparently meant to please those who hate Israel.
Levy writes, If Israel were weaker, it would work harder to be accepted in the region. It is literally impossible for Israel to try harder to be accepted in the region, short of committing suicide, which practically all its neighbors have been demanding for 70 years. Israel has accepted several partition plans and peace agreements over the years that were in Israels disadvantage, but that the Arabs refused. Even today, Israel works with and assists countries still officially at war with it. It is no secret that Israel is engaged in an extensive charm offensive to gain allies among Arab countries, but apparently Levy hasnt noticed.
Levy writes, If it were less strong, Israel would have had to put an end to the curse of the occupation. On this, he is correct. If Israel was weaker, it would have done in Judea and Samaria what it did in Gaza, with the same results. It would have unconditionally withdrawn its troops and forcibly dragged Jews out of their homes, and its reward would have been endless attacks, except in this case without the possibility of imposing a reliable blockade on weapons into the terrorist enclave.

Levy is in fact drunk on that power. He lets free of his contempt for Israel by repeating falsehoods that sound plausible to misinformed people, leading to yet more hatred against the tiny Jewish state.
