Impt. question & discussion about whether the US could become a nation of growing homeless encampments, like 'favelas' and barrios in Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as the far right members discuss, and more.

(41,127 posts)founder of the JBS, John Birch Society has been saying the same warnings and wrote a book about the far right several years ago, "Wrapped in the Flag." Claire posted on DU after her book came out. I remember her stressing that they want to take the US back to 1900. Fred Koch, Sr., the father of Charles and David Koch was a founding member of JBS. https://claireconner.com/

(8,200 posts)Here are just a few excerpts of the Libertarian Party platform that David Koch ran on in 1980:
We urge the repeal of federal campaign finance laws, and the immediate abolition of the despotic Federal Election Commission. We favor the abolition of Medicare and Medicaid programs. We oppose any compulsory insurance or tax-supported plan to provide health services, including those which finance abortion services. We also favor the deregulation of the medical insurance industry. We favor the repeal of the fraudulent, virtually bankrupt, and increasingly oppressive Social Security system. Pending that repeal, participation in Social Security should be made voluntary. We propose the abolition of the governmental Postal Service. The present system, in addition to being inefficient, encourages governmental surveillance of private correspondence. Pending abolition, we call for an end to the monopoly system and for allowing free competition in all aspects of postal service. We oppose all personal and corporate income taxation, including capital gains taxes. We support the eventual repeal of all taxation. As an interim measure, all criminal and civil sanctions against tax evasion should be terminated immediately. We support repeal of all law which impede the ability of any person to find employment, such as minimum wage laws. We advocate the complete separation of education and State. Government schools lead to the indoctrination of children and interfere with the free choice of individuals. Government ownership, operation, regulation, and subsidy of schools and colleges should be ended. We condemn compulsory education laws
and we call for the immediate repeal of such laws. We support the repeal of all taxes on the income or property of private schools, whether profit or non-profit. We support the abolition of the Environmental Protection Agency. We support abolition of the Department of Energy. We call for the dissolution of all government agencies concerned with transportation, including the Department of Transportation. We demand the return of America's railroad system to private ownership. We call for the privatization of the public roads and national highway system. We specifically oppose laws requiring an individual to buy or use so-called "selfprotection" equipment such as safety belts, air bags, or crash helmets. We advocate the abolition of the Federal Aviation Administration. We advocate the abolition of the Food and Drug Administration. We support an end to all subsidies for child-bearing built into our present laws, including all welfare plans and the provision of tax-supported services for children.

(8,200 posts)It is not an exaggeration that the Republican Party is following the fascist blue print for the take over of the government and the establishment of an authoritarian presidency. Their goal is simple. Transform the presidency into supreme authority over every aspect of government subjugating the congress and judicial to their dictates. They are intent of ruling with a cadre of the extremely wealthy and a ruling body just as what exists in Russia and China. Without some serious intervention they very well may achieve their goal during the Trump presidency. Any national emergency, perhaps even conspired one, could serve as the catalyst to bring it about. Remember that during the Bush administration they used the destruction of the Twin Towers as an excuse to attack Iraq. The neo-cons who dominated the Bush administration totally manufactured fake intelligence during this period of chaos to put their plan to attack Iraq into motion. Yes, it can and is happening here.

(5,106 posts)It seems she has a valid and scary point (I think), but it's hard to keep up, because she is so anxious to get so much in. There are so many pundits (even conservative) who are agreeing with her , and they need to cooperate...weirdly from Noah Chomsky to George Will. Hopefully someone with serious clout can bring things together.

*JANE MAYER'S recent best seller book, "DARK MONEY" also delves into the far right network and the Kochs.
*Note the 1980 Libertarian Party platform VP candidate David Koch ran on listed below in this article from Huff Post 2014, "WHO ARE THE KOCH BROTHERS AND WHAT DO THEY WANT?* https://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-bernie-sanders/who-are-the-koch-brothers_b_5165995.html
READ:
"It is not widely known that David Koch was the Libertarian Party vice-presidential candidate in 1980. He believed that Ronald Reagan was much too liberal. Despite Mr. Koch putting a substantial sum of money into the campaign, his ticket only received 1 percent of the vote. Most Americans thought the Libertarian Party platform of 1980 was extremist and way out of touch with what the American people wanted and needed. ~ Fast-forward 34 years and the most significant reality of modern politics is how successful David Koch and like-minded billionaires have been in moving the Republican Party to the extreme right. Amazingly, much of what was considered extremist and kooky in 1980 has become part of todays mainstream Republican thinking"...
*A few examples: In 1980, Libertarian vice-presidential candidate David Koch ran on a platform that called for abolishing the minimum wage. Thirty-four years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of 1 percent of the American people. Today, not only does virtually every Republican in Congress oppose raising the $7.25 an hour minimum wage, many of them, including Republican leaders like Mitch McConnell and John McCain, are on record for abolishing the concept of the federal minimum wage.
>In 1980, the platform of David Kochs Libertarian Party favored the abolition of Medicare and Medicaid programs. Thirty-four years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of one percent of the American people. Today, the mainstream view of the Republican Party, as seen in the recently passed Ryan budget, is to end Medicare as we know it, cut Medicaid by more than $1.5 trillion over the next decade, and repeal the Affordable Care Act. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Under the Ryan plan, at least 40 million people 1 in 8 Americans would lose health insurance or fail to obtain insurance by 2024. Most of them would be people with low or moderate incomes.
>In 1980, the platform of David Kochs Libertarian Party called for the repeal of the fraudulent, virtually bankrupt, and increasingly oppressive Social Security system. Thirty-four years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of 1 percent of the American people. Today, the mainstream view of the Republican Party is that entitlement reform is absolutely necessary. For some, this means major cuts in Social Security. For others who believe Social Security is unconstitutional or a Ponzi scheme this means the privatization of Social Security or abolishing this program completely for those who are under 60 years of age.
>In 1980, David Kochs Libertarian Party platform stated We oppose all personal and corporate income taxation, including capital gains taxes...We support the eventual repeal of all taxation...As an interim measure, all criminal and civil sanctions against tax evasion should be terminated immediately. Thirty-four years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of 1 percent of the American people. Today, 75 Republicans in the House have co-sponsored a bill that Paul Ryan has said would eliminate taxes on wages, corporations, self-employment, capital gains, and gift and death taxes in favor of a personal-consumption tax....

(23,944 posts)i hope she's overestimating what they can accomplish, but i have to admit it looks like they've pretty much got this on lock, just working on shifting the Overton Window until society at large thinks it's moral and just that they won their rigged game.
dammit, we had a real chance 50 years ago, but we took our eye off the ball, it slipped away, and now we're getting roflstomped. a hard rain's gonna fall.

We Dems ceded too many times to the knuckle brawl that was taking us to this point. Unfortunately, Obama's background as a community organizer and gentleman was not a match for the plotters. A community organizer's M.O. is to first seek consensus. That was never going to happen.
What can we do about that? How can we get the people in place to turn this around?
I have long thought that monied Dems need to bankroll a huge PR education offensive to ameliorate the pathetic status of civic discourse. Fund a union newspaper of national stature. Get Hollywood on it, with movies and TV. Fund a satellite radio station. GET MOVING, lefties! Show some strategy and dynamism!
