George Orwell (1903-1950) is the most famous English language writer of the 20th century, the author of 'Animal Farm' and '1984.' What was he trying to tell us & what is his genius? In 1945, Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was published. A political fable set in a farmyard but based on Stalin's betrayal of the Russian Revolution, it made Orwell's name & ensured he was financially comfortable for the first time in his life. In 1949, his classic 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' was published. Set in an imaginary totalitarian future, the book made a deep impression, with its title & many phrases - such as 'Big Brother is watching you', 'newspeak' & 'doublethink'- entering popular use. Orwell's health began deteriorating & he died of tuberculosis 21 Jan. 1950. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/orwell_george.shtml

(25,225 posts)the prospect of such a future scared the hell out of me.
Here we are in 2018 and 1984 is a reality now.
Again this book left an impression on me and probably was a contributing factor of me tending toward the Dems as a political Party.
I'm just wondering about the 'deplorables'. Surely this book made and impression on many of them too. I just can't believe that knowing the story of the book 1984 that these 'deplorables' can't see that we are living out 1984 today. One would think it would scare them to abandon Trump and embrace the Dems.

(41,103 posts)a comment that said years ago, conservatives were encouraged to read Ayn Ran's "Atlas Shrugged," and "1984." For suggestions I suppose which is very bizarre and scary!

(41,103 posts)works on propaganda, totalitarianism and the future if he'd had a normal life span into the 1970s and 1980s. What a great loss far too young.
