(14,723 posts)I am wondering even with the framing of the women as being so powerful in this film, the man is still the "king".
niyad
(113,074 posts)the queen mother is equally powerful, as are the rest of the women.

(16,850 posts)There would be no king without a Queen.
I agree there should be more strong women super hero characters, but I strongly applaud this director for highlighting, not only the amazing character of Black Panther, but also showcasing a strong group of women surrounding him.

(128,487 posts)and unfortunately few do, then you will discover that the concept (and power structure) of "King" and "Queen" on the African continent was not the same as the European, patriarchal-focused monarchies. And that goes back to the various ancient Egyptian monarchies.
There were defined "roles" and power associated with those roles. And the traditional "roles" were so ingrained over thousands of years, that they continue to exist today - even in the African diaspora, AND outside of the existence of a monarchy. And unfortunately, those of us in the diaspora who are minorities in European-based patriarchal countries, suffer from the clash of expectations for the male/female roles.
I reserved a ticket to go see this Tuesday so will have an opportunity to see how this plays out.

(28,940 posts)It's such a rich story with everything you'd want in a film: complex narrative, strong charismatic characters with a lot on their plates and the actors to bring it, eye popping visuals, even the music. It's almost too rich. It'll take several viewings to get it all. Yeah, we'll buy the streaming and the DVD.
Yes, I hope this film wads the racists' panties so tight it'll strangle them.

(16,850 posts)Its an amazing comic book movie....absolutely incredible in its cinematography and the story. Your post is very astute in that women play a vital role in the story. My 8yo son said You know how you spell amazing....Black Panther. It was great and Ill provide a more in depth review tomorrow, but I just wanted to share our excitement.

(53,921 posts)Marvel puts out some pretty good superhero movies, so this will likely be a winner. I am glad, though, DC beat them to the punch with a female driven one, WONDER WOMAN....which KICKED ASS at the box offices!

(37,648 posts)I imagine there aren't a lot of roles around for black women. There are hardly any for white women, as it is.
I look at lists of new films coming out, and I notice sometimes how many men those movies star and give work to, but few women.
Docreed2003
(16,850 posts)In fact, the strong role of women in the movie was one of my favorite parts.
