Video of Police Shooting of Daniel Shaver: He didn't play "Simon Says" right and was killed for it.

The cop could have had the guy lay perfectly still once he was prone, and gone up to him and cuffed him or had his partner do it. Instead he gives him complicated instructions, all the while telling the bawling man terrified for his life that any error will result in his death.

This policeman was just acquitted and NOW the judge releases the video.

Does anyone know whether the video was shown to the jury? I assume so but I don't see that mentioned specifically in the news articles I've read.

No attempt was made to deescalate the situation, if anything the issuing of extra instructions including telling the guy to rise from a prone position and crawl towards the officers simply increased the risk of this killing many fold because of the possibility the guy might screw up some element of the many instructions under pressure.

People talk about how risky the cops' jobs are, but these incidents show them putting all the risk on the citizen. If the cop doesn't like something about the way you twitch you are dead, they don't have to value your life at all and endure any of the risk themselves to make you, the citizen, safer.

1. Mandatory annual psych evals would seem to be a good idea

And a full scale psych evaluation before they are even allowed into the academy.

2. Danger Police in Area!

Ordinary citizens must be brave and clear headed when police point a gun at them, while cops just have to be afraid and shoot to kill.

12. And what sorta testimony did they make their decision on???????

What I saw in that video was a murder. And I don't care WHAT the victim was supposed to have done to receive that fate.

Here's hoping that overzealous office can not ever get a night's sleep without enduring this nightmare.

18. I sincerely doubt....

that officer feels any remorse whatsoever. From the forceful instructions, which obviously intimidated and frightened the suspect, it seems the officer was wired way too tight to be in that situation. He was really getting off on it.
Two officers, both with assault rifles trained on the suspect, giving him overly-complicated instructions on how not to be shot, nervous as all get-out.......it was a murder waiting to happen. There was absolutely no reason for the officer to fire 5 lethal shots into the suspect. None.
In Police work, like everything else, the old 'kiss' principle works the best. 'Keep it simple, stupid'. Making an elaborate production out of something that should have been a simple procedure was totally uncalled for.
Some people just shouldn't be in the Police Force, and that officer is one of them.

21. I could not agree more

They should have asked that cop to demonstrate how someone CRAWLS with their legs crossed and their hands flat out in front of them. And WHY hardly a word from his partner? Probably afraid he'd get holed too!

This "lawman" should be sentenced to a life of cleaning out zoo cages - with the animals in them.

22. I've read that he's no longer on the force....

he was fired for - among other things - of having "You're Fucked" etched on the hand guard in about 2 inch letters of that AR-15 he was using to "defuse" the situation. They showed a picture of it in one of the Arizona newspapers (with the __cked part blurred out of course). He was a guy just looking for a chance to us that assault weapon on someone!
There's no way in hell that guy should have skated. The suspect was not armed, and feared for his life......for very good reasons.

5. I can't watch it. Your description is horrific enough.

I feel like screaming. There is just no way on earth the great majority of these incidents with police killing people can be justified. How the fuck do they keep getting off?

Also, I keep asking this and no one answers: If they absolutely must shoot, why can they not shoot in a not-fatal way? Why not disable the person's ability to be dangerous. Why must they shoot to kill?

7. Police are trained to shoot center-mass in order to stop the threat...

That aside though, the cowardly scumbag "officer" in this case should have been convicted of second-degree murder and given 25 to Life, at a minimum...

10. In most of these cases, the "threat" is not such that they need to shoot to kill to stop it.

You shoot someone in the knee and you will stop them. They need to be trained to have more options.

And yes, my god, it's unconscionable they way people's lives are dismissed as expendable because a cop doesn't have or is too lazy or cowardly to use any other skills but shooting people.

11. That cop's a murderer.

The very last person who should be a cop is a murderer.

Whoever hired and is guiding this officer is a murderer as well.

And whoever hired and is guiding that whoever is a murderer as well.

This is a fucked up torture video. Snuff flick. Quite evil.

13. Holy shit

That has to be against police training and normal procedure. Which should be lie face down, hands out where the cops can see, and then the cops walk towards the perp. Issuing complicated instructions to a guy who is terrified and drunk and constantly told that any mistake will result in execution. That cop sounded like he really wanted a kill that night and saw his chance.

This was a whole year before the Las Vegas attack so there would be no reason for them to suspect a dangerous white guy pointing a gun out of a hotel window.

And how terrible am I for pointing out that the innocent unarmed guy is white? Whose life matters when everyone involved is white?

Arizona's jurors.

Even the South Carolina jurors sent that cop to prison who shot the guy in the back.

16. He complied to the LETTER terrified for his life; and the arrogant cop STILL shot him.

In other countries; many cops simply donít have guns at all and have techniques to De- escalate.

The man was not armed; but in our gun infested nation; everyone is presumed to be.

That cluster-fuck they ordered the suspect to go through was unconscionable. 'Keep It Simple Stupid' - is always the best way to diffuse any situation. Ridiculous.
