Why do humans follow the crazies and let them get in control?

(6,476 posts)with being con artists. Couple that with the millions who take drugs that short circuit empathy and emotion and here we are. Anyone who hasn't been shaken awake by this election season is too far gone to help.

(201 posts)I stopped watching around 40 minutes.
I think the information about psychopaths is important for everyone to understand and be aware of.
But, when they denigrate use of antidepressants with a broad brush of people not wanting to feel sad, or wanting not to feel nervous going to parties, they lose me. Depression is a serious problem for many people and anti-depressants can help. Antidepressants do not turn people into psychopaths. In contrast, they can help people stand up to the psychopaths they have to deal with in their lives and in our world.

(6,476 posts)People taking drugs/medications that have the side effect of numbing the emotions and suppressing empathy
Depression is a rational response to an irrational society in my view and yes, it is a problem but taking a drug isn't therapy. It treats a symptom. I've taken antidepressants before and while they helped I noticed the muting of emotions and the heightened sense of confidence even when it wasn't warranted.
I think they were talking about the effects of the population being drugged into compliance.

(201 posts)For example, where are the double blind studies using MRI, demonstrating that the images of psychopathic brain responses are indistinguishable from images of non-phychopathic people taking antidepressants? Anecdotal stories do not qualify as scientific evidence.
True depression is an issue of brain biochemistry, not simply an environmental response, and not simply a symptom. I agree that antidepressants can be overprescribed, or the individual response to a particular antidepressant or dosage can be ineffective or have negative results. Nevertheless, antidepressants do help many people.

(6,476 posts)Scientology plot but I'll look for it. I don't know how you can tell what's true depression from 'regular' depression but no one ever offered me an MRI so what would I know. I was given meds and they made me feel better and I noticed the difference.
I think they make good points on why people are complacent and are able to stay quiet when they should be in the streets. I have often wondered why it is Americans by and large appear to be so complacent and wondered about medications etc.
I reject that they were saying a medicated brain was the same as a psychotic brain. Where do they say that?
Also they talk about many mood altering medications not just antidepressants.

(201 posts)Since I stopped watching the video midway, they may clarify the point that they are trying to make about the drugs and provide a better context. I do not think they explicitly stated that antidepressants make people psychopathic, I thought it was being implied. Either that or that psychopaths were able to "get away with it" because most are too numb from medication to notice or care.
In contrast, even one of the psychiatrists they interview who specializes in psychopaths states that he cannot recognize psychopaths from casual interactions.
I think the reason we allow psychopaths to lead us has more to do with our national myths. Things like the great man theory of history, myths about pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps, myths about individuality and freedom enabling one to do anything one sets their mind to if only they work hard enough, are ideas that help destroy us as a society. I think those kinds of things drive us apart and incapacitate us. They make it difficult for Americans to acknowledge class segregation and forces on social groups, ethnic groups, etc.
I do agree that overmedication may well play a role in this, but I don't think it is a main factor.
I apologize for being so flinty in my earlier comments. Thank you for the dialogue.

(6,476 posts)I don't think we can point to one or two things and explain what is happening. You have put your finger on something that is very important as well, our myths. I've come to see them as brainwashing from birth. This video brings into focus our part as individuals in the messed up society we live in. We have genuine psychopaths in the top tier of government and business and that fact needs to be recognized.
Thanks again..
