(135,425 posts)Who else could be so bad at math and history to think that someone living today would have a "grandmother" who was alive in the 1600s...!
Maybe the author was one of those children that Porgie left behind!

But only a vampire could have a "grandmother" who was alive in the 1600s!

(24,331 posts)One, the locals got considerably more than 37 coins or whatever you want to call it.
Two, it wasn't a payment for sale of the island--it was a moving-in gift to convince them to let the Europeans co-habit in a part of the island the natives weren't even using. The tribe they paid actually lived in what is now New Jersey, and only came to Manhattan to hunt.
When you boil it down, it's really a very insulting and racist myth--the poor hapless natives were too stupid not to sell their homes to the clever Europeans for a handful of shiny beads.

(1,939 posts)I am sorry if people misinterpreted this post. I am someone who strongly supports Elizabeth Warren and this is an issue that has been pushed by Scott Brown's people very strongly in the Massachusetts area. It took the papers in the Boston area roughly about four weeks to take the bait but now we're having a serious debate about Elizabeth Warren's native American heritage. This non-story is what they are literally talking about rather than the fact that nearly every dime Wall St. has given to politicians in this race has gone to Scott Brown. And frankly, there hasn't been many native Americans around here in years so the anti-native American story doesn't play to well around here. It just makes me question whether there is someone on Brown's staff from a state where there are still large reservations where the native american bigotry plays a lot better.
