I have heard the excuse how much cops hate having to wear heavy bullet proof vests. Running is almost impossible and you sweat profusely in the summer. Besides being racist I suspect many police are unhinged by the weight of the gear. Carrying a semi automatic pistol capable of unloading 16 rounds in 10 seconds does not help.

An acquaintance tells the story of a incoherent man swinging a crow bar at pedestrians. Answers dispatch man was obviously incoherent runs toward him hits police car with crow bar officer draws pistol and instantly realizes that was not a good option. Man then responds to warning turns and runs straight for the crowd with crowbar. Out comes taser even that was not workable. Officer ends up chasing man for 3 blocks where man enters house. Man in this circumstance was subdued not shot or tased. It turned out a taser would have killed him. It took several months for the system to place the man in a psychiatric hospital.

The police officer threw up when it was over with. Not a job I would want. It is the luck of the draw to find a police officer with a conscience. In this circumstance the policeman was required to fill out a detailed report for the record immediately after the incident. Apparently that does not happen in all of these shootings and there is a profound lack of accountability.

Some applicants do not pass. Also it was the first incident of a drawn weapon in recent memory for the department. Sometimes you do get what you are willing or unwilling to pay for. He was rewarded by becoming the department training officer. I guess armed police are required in a country that allows festering problems to continue without trying to solve those issues.

I wonder how much of the bad training comes from budget cutbacks. I have wished they got better martial arts training since the Malice Green case in Detroit many years ago. The police beat Green to death because they wanted him to open up his hand. They pounded on his head with flashlights, yelling, "Open your hand! Open your hand!" I kept thinking if they knew how, they could have just put him in an inside wrist lock, which forces the fingers to pop open. I used to know someone who trained police in such methods, and weapon retention and weapon takeaways, but I don't know if they can still afford such training.

Psychological profiles of police routinely identify characteristics like: isolative, prejudiced, conservative, suspicious, cynical, and assertive.

It’s a pretty well-established fact that positions of power, like that of a police officer, attract a larger number of people with psychopathic tendencies. Yet we have no national standard for screening police in the United States. As Truth Out reports, 22 states do not require a psychological evaluation, conducted by a mental health professional, as part of the screening process for police. Those states that do require psychological testing do not mandate how the tests are to be performed or strive to ensure they’re conducted in an impartial manner.
