Edit: Building collapse in Cairo NOT Nepal.

Last edited Sat Apr 25, 2015, 05:29 PM - Edit history (1)

Sorry! Looks like the Bengal TV station used this as Nepal EQ. footage.
This collapse occured day before Thurs in Cairo -

Youtube text
A dramatic video has emerged of an entire block of flats collapsing in Cairo, Egypt on Thursday.

Residents were evacuated minutes before the building came crashing down - with all miraculously escaping unscathed.

According to the filmer, whose uncle occupied one of the doomed flats, work on building an adjacent block had caused deep cracks to appear in the building.

Residents had woken that morning to strange noises and saw actual movement in the building's structure when an evacuation was decided to be necessary.

Despite losing their home and all their possessions, nobody was reportedly hurt in the incident.

People forget it's NOT a "building" so much as a stack of bricks that needs to be LEVEL. Spitfire of ATJ Apr 2015 #5

If you are able to run outside while the quake is happening, you run the risk of getting hit with debris, like bricks, trees, power lines, etc.

The last quake I was in was a 6.8 and I got knocked to the ground. During a 7.9, it's probably hard to even get under a table or door frame.

imho, as a general rule, a table or door frame is best until the shaking stops...then get out, but watch for falling stuff.

this probably happened during one of the aftershocks, of which there have been many, all over the country.

This is nearly as bad as Haiti and for the same reasons: extreme poverty and poor building codes because earthquake safety in building is expensive. They use local bricks because local bricks are cheap, even if they are major liabilities in an earthquake zone.

There have been multiple avalanches and word has it that mountaineers have been killed in the area along with everyone else.

This is horrible, it was very strong and very shallow.

(and yes, get out of a brick building ASAP as soon as the shaking subsides. You don't want to get out too quickly while it's still shaking because too many things tend to fall off such buildings and kill people in the streets)

Think it was 6.7. I was in downtown Bremerton when the ground started rolling beneath us. A coworker got under her desk, I headed for a doorway and rode it out, plaster raining down around me. Things didn't look too good outside, so we stayed put for quite awhile after the shaking stopped. I'd been through the 6.7 in 1949, scared me spitless (I was a kid of course), and also clearly recall the 1993 Spring Break Quake near Salem, 5.6 but bad enough. Lots of damage in the area. Now live East of the Cascades, where we do earthquake preparedness plans for when the Big One hits the subduction zone off the coast and destroys much of Western OR and survivors head our way. Don't mean to make light of it. Serious stuff, that's for sure.

Hard to put into words how horrible is the Nepal quake and its aftermath. Defies belief. Take care and be safe there in Seattle, my old home town!
