There’s already been a powerful connection between listening to music and its ability to conjure up old memories and Alzheimer’s patients.

But what about actually playing music?

Playing music has been scientifically proven to stimulate and engage the brain in unique ways. This powerful mental workout helps build communication gaps between the left and right sides of the brain, allowing messages between the hemispheres to travel faster and through more diverse routes.

When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. What's going on? Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians' brains when they play, and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout.
