(889 posts)Last month Galloway called for his city to be an "Israeli-free" zone. No Israeli goods or servives should be allowed. And no Israeli students or tourists should be allowed.
So Galloway is putting all Israeli students and tourists in the same boat as the Israeli extremists. He is judging each individual Israeli not on their actions, but on the actions of others.
That's narrow-minded bigotry, but I'm sure someone here will jump to his defense: Got to teach Israel a lesson, don't you know? And bigotry is acceptable if the cause is just, don't you know?
Perhaps someone will even point out official Israeli misconduct (there are many examples of that), as if minor bigotry can be excused if greater crimes exist elsewhere.
Yeah, right.

(8,559 posts)Galloway has a fairly long and well established track record as an MP. I don't think even his most vocal detractors consider him to be bigoted.
That said, he's obviously taking some heat for these comments. Maybe the I/P forum would be a better place for you to make your case against Galloway as this is off topic and strays into the issue of divestment tied to Israel's most recent slaughter of Gazan citizens.

(889 posts)Many policies of the Israeli government deserve to be condemned. I find Israel's "settlement" policy regarding the West Bank to be particularly reprehensible.
So the proper thing is to denounce the Israeli government, its leadership, and its policies. Get the message out. Protest at embassies. But don't target individuals (students, tourists) based on what some larger group has done.
In fact, it might be wise to admit those Israeli students and tourists! Perhaps discussions over coffee, or a pint of ale, would help them to see the errors of their government.
I watched the video. Calling for a region to be "Israeli-free", my goodness, don't you see how bad that looks? That is very close to the old nazi phrase of "jew-free".
I'm hoping that Galloway did not intend to parallel his remarks to those of the nazis. I do not know enough about him to be sure either way.
Regardless, his comments have hurt his cause. I'm on the Palestinian side of the debate, and Galloway has certainly lost my respect (as if that matters much).
And one more thing. Apologies if I have strayed too far afield from the OP.

(8,559 posts)... I agree that it matters very much how we protest Israel's actions and that Israeli students, academics, and tourists should not be shunned, targeted, or prohibited from free travel.
No apology necessary. I appreciate your contribution to this thread.

(740 posts)As far as beheading goes, the Saudi's are experts. Galloway is correct in that you cannot affect terrorism through war. Terrorism has causes, in my opinion, economic inequality. To affect change you must address the cause. If you're not addressing the cause, you're wasting your time.

(20,453 posts)It would appear he's better versed on the history of this religious war, too.
What is the matter with these clucks saying they're "internationalists"
and therefore affirm their "how high?" answer when the U.S. says "jump"? There is no reason for the U.K. or the U.S. to mire itself inside the religious war that we slaughtered and tortured over 11 years ago
too long a history for people on both sides of the pond.
Thanks for the video, MJ.

(8,559 posts)There's of course no valid justification for the U.K. or the U.S. to mire themselves inside this religious sectarian war, but there is, as always, most definitely a reason for it and it has NOTHING to do with combating terrorism.

(8,219 posts)as to whether someone is allowed to speak out against, or to be angry about, the genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinian people in Gaza, this is the same MP Galloway who was attacked on the street of London by a man wearing the logo of the IDF. Mr. Galloway sustained severe injuries as a result of the attack.
Here is a link to the interview where he describes the attack:
Reflecting on the "silence of Westminster over the attack" Galloway asks, "If a Muslim fanatic supporter of Hamas had attacked, say, a pro-Israeli MP on the streets of London, would this story now be bigger than the story about the attack on me?" Indeed!

(2,060 posts)believe what we are doing now will result in the deaths of not only millions of innocents, but we actually may be included in those innocents. I hope Cameron is quickly replaced for his idiocy in going along with these attacks.

(8,559 posts)To think that China, Russia, and Iran will simply sit by and let this madness go on indefinitely is the height of naivety. When/if they choose to form some kind of military alliance and finally decide enough is enough, US citizens may find themselves facing a nightmare they're wholly unprepared for.

(2,060 posts)to go repair a printer for a hospital but I may PM you my answer when I get back, if that is okay. I literally cannot believe the abject unawareness of people in this country. It astounds me. We are basically at horror's door. Later.
