because the people who are in charge will be dead before the hardest parts of the problem hit. They have no personal incentive to try to halt it. In fact there's quite the opposite - they can loot the future to play now, and leave the debts on our shoulders.

They mostly can't conceive of the notion of not pillaging future generations for their own personal enjoyment now. They can't wrap their stunted minds around the idea o cutting back their own glorious excesses in order to invest in that future instead. No, thy demand that the people who they are stealing from figure out how to do it, and sneer at us for not having anything to do it with.
