Related: About this forumDramatic Car Safety Crash Results -- COOL VIDEO if hunting for a car
A family member was in a major car crash last year and is now hunting for a car. While looking online, I found a video for the exact car she was interested in. WOW, what a difference watching a video can make!!! I'm just sharing a couple of the 'Insurance Institute for Highway Safety' videos, but you can visit their YouTube Channel and use the magnifying-glass 'search' feature to look up results for a car you may be interested in.
(as a note, several Mazda models actually earned good ratings despite the video I linked to, so manufacturer isn't the only factor you should be looking at. Even the second video below shows a BMW that didn't stop when tested early on... so all things being equal, it is best to do your homework!)
LINK TO RATINGS OVERALL -- WINNERS -- ie SAFER CARS
___________
It is great that folks are putting pressure on car companies to make vehicles safer. Just watching a few videos truly put crashes in perspective when hunting for one. While it is impressive to see how much safety considerations are already put into car engineering, it is also eye-opening to see the major differences between cars when it comes to how the driver or passengers fare when hitting or being hit.
Just wanted to share as I had no idea these helpful video resources were available!

(14,013 posts)2. Thanks T2T. That mostly how we picked our new (used) car. Those crash tests and
the poor test dummies with red paint on them can sure change your mind about the "cool" car vs the "safe" car. Safe as a driver can be, it turns out the there are other knuckleheads on the roads...and Newton's laws.

(26,325 posts)3. My partner is obsessed with these tests (and all things car).
He checks them out before we buy anything.
We made our niece and her passengers watch this test video when they borrowed my work truck to drive to Gulf Shores.
Buckle up ALL passengers including rear passengers was the point:

were just starting out on a day trip and had been laughing and finding a good radio station before buckling up, the one survivor vaguely recalled...
No key is turned till ALL are bucked, the lesson.

Glad there are watchdog groups out there to apply pressures to improve like that... win-win for all I think.
