(1,555 posts)I'm not against the notion of being a feminist... though I think we should all be Egalitarian instead... it's far more inclusive.

(8,170 posts)are not exclusive; i.e. you can be an egalitarian and a feminist.
It is also possible to be egalitarian and not feminist by not taking positive steps to ensure the legal equality of women is not subverted by social, political and religious behaviour. In theory women have much the same rights as men in Western society but often that theory is overpowered by perceptions inherited from times when such equality did not exist. Even simple things like the jokes, women being silly (e.g. blonde jokes), inept (e.g. car maintenance jokes) and overly emotional (menstruation jokes).

(1,555 posts)She touches very briefly on self identification, and while I can see where you'd infer that was the point of the video, I must respectfully disagree with you. The point I see her making is that men and women should treat each other and be taught equally. Excellent video by the way... thank you for posting it.
"It is also possible to be egalitarian and not feminist by not taking positive steps to ensure the legal equality of women is not subverted by social, political and religious behavior" - I couldn't disagree more. An Egalitarian supports the rights of all. Failing to work for gender equality for either gender means you're not an Egalitarian, but merely someone who pays lip service to being one. I say this as someone who has self identified as an Egalitarian.

(8,170 posts)The whole talk is about how you identify yourself. That is why she returns to the point
And you are confusing rights with perceptions; in theory a black American has the same rights and opportunities as a white American, in practise blacks are perceived as somehow less deserving or more criminal or more needy.

Good day.
