My Revolution - A Video Diary from Kiev - (full documentary) released on 3-16-14

My former Son in Law (Richard DeLong) is one of the people interviewed for this documentary. He has lived in Ukraine for the better part of the last 12 years and understands the culture and the people very well. He is the reason that my Daughter still lives in Kyiv to this day. I respect him deeply and is a very kind hearted and intelligent man.

----------------------------------

The film "My Revolution -- Video Diary from Kiev" focuses on the protests in Ukraine, using only private video-footage and eye-witness reports. What was the goal of the protesters? How did peaceful demonstrations turn into the radical violence? Were the activists surprised by the Russian reaction?

The film highlights the beginning phase of the Euromaidan protests after the refusal of the Ukrainian government to sign the EU Association Agreement in early November 2013. It becomes apparent how the riots between the police and the protesters escalates during the last days of February 2014. Furthermore, after the escape of the Ukrainian government, the crisis on Crimea gets out of control. All of the protagonists are present during the Euromaidan protests in Kiev and reported via Skype about their experiences -- a rare glimpse behind the scenes.

3. Can you imagine if that was Occupy and New York City?

And Occupy had embraced the Black Bloc and there tactics of violence against the cops?

Perhaps they were wrong, perhaps if they had become violent then DU would have been behind them?...No I think not...when the cops came down on them like a ton of bricks we would have cheered for it...
Perhaps we are just a nation of cowards, too wimpy to do what these people did.

We live in a strange world today...schizophrenic I think

4. zeemike.... you bring up a great point....

Although I support the maiden uprising in Ukraine as I have a daughter living in Kyiv and she has kept me informed on what was happening as well as my former son in law.... had a similar uprising happened in the U.S. it would have been squashed in a heartbeat and very few people would have supported it.

Our mainstream media would have condemned the "riots" and most of the populace would have seen them as our media would have portrayed them as "thugs" and "gangsters".

Yet as I watched the above video you can see that the vast majority of the protesters were in my opinion peaceful and everyday people who just want a free and honest country.

Maybe someday we will be unified enough to stand against corruption in our own government but with the 1% having so much influence in our media I don't see that happening.

We had a protest of over 100,000 people recently in N.C. and not a single word of it made the national news.

Throw on top of that 25% to 35% of the people are actually idiots and have zero clue on the reality of what is happening.

Thanks for your input and sharing your perspective....

8. If the bloc was embraced and if provocateurs were minimized, we'd still have it.

Probably an enclave in Oakland at the minimum. It'd be in the courts by now, squatters rights would be discussed, it'd be great. I doubt the bloc could've succeeded in New York or Colorado, but they had a chance in Oakland (and heck, it could've moved from Denver to Boulder in Colorado after seeing the tactics work).

But instead what happened is the bloc was being accused of being provocateurs themselves, patently untrue, but impossible to disprove and there were probably subversive elements. Those elements would have had to have been managed. Free association is the best way, if there were actions that you disagreed with, then you disassociate. After time the subversive elements get weeded out and the police learn the infiltrate and instigate method is powerless.

DUers did cheer the Occupy crackdowns. Some DUers accused them of being violent hooligans. Chris Hedge's "The Cancer of Occupy" was posted around here, and not just by Occupy supporters, but Occupy haters.

5. Simply Like the Blind Men and the Elephant - Or Are More Sinister Hidden Agendas Involved?

A lot of the issues that get presented here on DU are pretty clear and unambiguous, fueling moral outrage in anyone with the human decency and common sense necessary to see things straight. Perhaps most of the issues and causes presented here fall into that category.

But the whole Ukrainian crisis has been a bird of a different feather, and something else indeed. We have had videos up on DU about the Ukrainian crisis that presented first one version of what was happening, then another one, completely different from the first, that really made it seem that these were murky waters indeed, and it was impossible to get to the bottom of what was actually going on. But happily, this video seems to clear things up in a realistic, believable way, and above all, it puts a human face - or human faces - on the whole Ukrainian crisis.

I now know that the first video on the Ukrainian crisis that I saw on DU, with the beautiful Ukrainian model narrating things, was actually much closer to the truth about what is actually happening, and that the previous video I saw, branding the whole Ukrainian uprising as Neo-Nazi and skinhead thugs taking over the country and shredding the constitution, was the real propaganda with sinister hidden motives. As I was thinking in a moment of relative realism and common sense after seeing that previous video:

Why would the US be supporting Neo-Nazis in the Ukraine when our leaders and politicians are so beholden to Israel, and AIPAC is breathing down their necks? Thankfully, this video blows a big hole in that theory, which now seems to be little more than cynical, sinister propaganda. My head is spinning too much, and this Ukrainian crisis has perplexed me to the point where my brain is too tired to try and figure out who was behind the propaganda thesis of the previous video, and what their motives were. I leave that to my colleagues in this forum to figure out, and am signing off.

6. I completely can relate to your senitments panfluteman!

Just as in our country we have each side trying to promote their own agenda with propaganda the crisis in Ukraine is no different.

I agree with your feeling about this video as it uses English speaking people that are close to the issue or at least understand the country and it's people very well.

I know also from my own Daughter who lives in Kyiv as well as Richard DeLong my former son in law that the violent side of the protests was a small faction of protesters. Which it is not beyond reason that even these could have been planted there to encourage violence so the governement could respond harshly. But that would be hard to prove.

Anyway thank you for you input and sharing your perspective.

7. Good post.

Nice to see someone's mind get changed by thoughtful consideration. Russia paid astroturfers to go around the internet spreading propaganda and Russian media parroted that confusing narrative for weeks. Once certain elements started posting here, posters who aren't regulars or posters who were on hiatus, it became clear to me that that the claims weren't happening. I watched the live feeds and avoided most text reports.

Whenever you look at a YouTube conspiracy video about Ukraine it's really obviously heavily edited, to the point where you have no idea what is going on but what the conspiracy people are trying to push.
