They hired local mercenaries to support their military in defending the borders. And when the empire went broke from its regressive tax-policy, the roman military collapsed and suddenly there were all those strangers on the border who wanted a piece of the cake.

...as a card-carrying member of the International Analogy Users Guild (a not-for-profit wordsmiths hangout), I couldn't disagree with you more. I am certified to use any kinds of analogies I happen to like. Up to and including those in the seventh degree hyperbole range. You have to be a real pro for that kind of wordplay.

There have been only three of us who have held such a distinction. Epiphanies Jones (537 BC - 502 BC, who played mostly back-alley amphitheaters and Carthaginian and Persian caravans and small markets like that) and of course one we all know, George Carlin. Further, since I'm not being paid for my words, I would think that only those with a fastidious bent would make such a remark this side of academia.

Besides, Wiki agrees with me.

- Mphfmmmm. So there!

For the price of their fortifications, they could defuse the situation by actually paying their fair share of taxes and paying employees a living wage...

Hell, it would probably be cheaper...they love a bargain.

All of this "protection" is surely tax deductible so my premise is probably wrong.

They could lose their next salary adjustment (INCREASE)! They could have their Platinum Cards cancelled! Worst of all, they could be kicked out of the country club and have no place to lord their money around trying to impress each other! And you know where all this leads?

- Lowered back down into the upper middle-class and sent back to the suburbs with their off-the-rack suits baby, that's where.

We don't have to ''do'' anything but wait for the inevitable collapse. The money will become worthless in no time. And then we'll subsequently see the separating of the wheat from the chaff process begin in earnest.

- Which will be interesting because some of the chaff don't know they're chaff. Yet.

They better board up their windows too. Security guards? Don't make me laugh. How about a private drone attack? Have they seen what those 50 cal military sniper rifles can do? ...and the distance? If someone wants to get them ...they will get them. I hope the 1% are spending a lot of money to protect themselves.

- And on that score, the only thing they've got going for them are their extremely small pinheads. So you have to aim for the largest part of their bodies: Their wallets.

Of course it's pretty safe below ground, if you're a rat:
