(381 posts)Smug ignorant phony repulsive cleric. He well represents the bastards who were just overthrown by the military.

(1,555 posts)I can't believe there was ever a god that would demand anyone hide their appearance, or for that matter, that anyone should be ashamed for being visible.

(32,723 posts)There was a time in America when the only time you saw a minister on TV was when it would do static, then a test pattern, then an announcement that they were beginning a broadcast day and describe their operating frequency and wattage and location of their facilities, then introduce a kindly, soft spoken old guy with the white collar doing the ritual thing of blessing the new day, then the farm report.

(1,555 posts)It didn't matter what you beliefs were, if you needed help, you could always go to a church. Now, parishioners are more concerned with your earthly political views than the health and well being of your spirit.

(32,723 posts)They use the classic techniques of the mythical Satan. They appeal to greed and hatred and fear and prejudice to get otherwise nice people to turn on each other with a total, even bloodthirsty fury using lies and manipulations and then present themselves as the heroes that will save us all by the elimination of the enemy. (Even though they count things like the Sierra Club as the enemy.)

(1,083 posts)Every time I went outside.."Put on your scarf! Cover your head." You'll get an ear-ache." Sorry, it just totally reminded me of my long gone mother. Do Catholic women still have to cover their heads in church? I'm non-religious, so I don't know these things. It seems to me that for a couple thousand years people wore something on their heads. I bet it was because they never washed their hair. ???
I'm glad this young woman stood up to this old guy's hypocrisy. He talked to her off camera without her wearing the hijab. People and their power trips. Ridiculous.

(9,001 posts)And the hair washing theory is kinda thin. If you look at cultures who wear head scarves or turbans on a regular basis they are either in windy places or hot places. The loose covering would be a some protection against sun stroke, providing a bit of shade and creating a insulating layer of air between the cloth and hair.

(4,079 posts)I was raised Catholic, and stuck with it until about the time I went to college. I'm 50 years old, and I can't remember women ever "having" to cover their heads in church. But it is certainly the case that women in general (in churches and otherwise) are less likely to wear hats or scarves on their heads these days. I think it's just a fashion change rather than any religious edict.
About thirty years ago (1985 or 86) I was traveling in Europe, and while in Rome I took a tour of the Sistine Chapel. The only dress code for women on the tour was that they could not wear pants, their shoulders must be covered, and their skirt must be long enough to cover their knees. But their was nothing about covering your head.
I like your theory about unwashed hair.

(10,270 posts)when JFK got elected. He was the first candidate in modern history NOT to wear one on an even semi-regular basis. It's one of the reasons people thought of him as young, new, and fresh. He didn't look like the Men who had come before him, and in a lot of peoples minds, didn't ACT like them either.
It's considered the reason wearing a hat with a decent suit began to go out of fashion.

(15,189 posts)Although I remember my mother wearing a hat and white gloves, and me too to church when I was small. Today I wouldn't be caught dead with a woman's hat on. Those traditions are long gone now. They've been gone since the early 70's. Same with wearing a dress. Back in the day, women wouldn't go out in slacks. I still remember in school girls had to wear dresses. By 3rd grade 1969, that rule was gone.

(17,301 posts)I have found when working on the farm, that a hat keeps my face cool and keeps the sunburn off. It protects my neck and provides an absorption rim for sweat.
It may be the same reasons women in dessert climates began wearing head coverings.

Good on that woman for putting it DOWN. I especially like her line about "I'll wear it for God, NOT for you."

(111,243 posts)and the biggest fools out there are men in patriarchal religions who presume to tell women how to dress.
It's a losing proposition in most parts of the world.
