And that goes directly to the problem with Smart's approach: Credibility. He cites mass shootings as a problem, then points to measures which don't address most mass shootings (however worthy of debate and enactment they may be). Instead, it's the pass SOMETHING approach, hoping it works, followed by throwing up hands in despair about why nothing gets done.

Mr. Smart needs to look closer to home to see why gridlock on this issue exists. His mish mash approach is also nothing new.

is the problem. If you cover a floor with tacks there's a good chance one's gonna violate your foot. It's BEYOND collective consent as to where there should be designated tack-free spaces of the floor - or under what circumstances the floor CAN be covered with tacks. Of course, while tacks can inflict injury on you - that's not what they were designed to do. Guns - on the other hand - are designed to mete out death. That's really what they're designed for. They weren't invented because there once was a plague of paper targets - they were designed to kill living things. And sadly, these tools lack the smarts to discern between game and humans when they're set off.
Sprinkle a few loonies and mal-intentioned into this ludicrous overabundance and you get gun cuddlers professing that EVEN MORE death tools are the necessary deterrent. Yeah. So let's not speak out. Or if we DO speak out, let's be careful we don't ire any of our devoted gun-cuddlers with ill-chosen words or intents. Let's just shut up and let Washington take care of this.
