BOSTON (AP) — A homeless Boston man who police said turned in a backpack containing tens of thousands of dollars in cash and traveler's checks said even if he were desperate he wouldn't have kept "even a penny."

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis honored Glen James on Monday, giving him a special citation and thanking him for an "extraordinary show of character and honesty."

James said in a handwritten statement he gave out at a news conference that he was glad to make sure the bag and its contents were returned to the owner.

"Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a penny," he said.

Not take a penny from the backback. Jerks and killers make the top news. This fellow deserves great news too. And there are many who would do the exact same thing.

The Reagan-worshipping media have tried to train us to believe that poor people, homeless people in particular, are parasites, slagging off the working people of the nation. That they are feckless, dishonest, and unreliable.

I see the truth of homeless life every day. The defining characteristic of homeless people is not that they are homeless, but that they are people. Good, bad, in-between, just like people with roofs over their heads.

Good for this guy. He makes me proud.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Honesty really paid off for a homeless man in Boston who turned in a backpack worth nearly $42,000 earlier this week.

Since his good deed, an online fundraiser had raised more than $73,000 for Glen James by Wednesday afternoon, and brought in offers from strangers who want to help the Good Samaritan by donating computers and offering health care services to him.

"I like to make people happy. That's what makes me happy," said Ethan Whittington, 27, of Midlothian, Va., who started the effort for James.

Whittington has never met James, but felt compelled to start a fundraising campaign for him after reading about him in the news.
