I'm going all out and buying this book in hard cover LOL. After I watched a PBS program years back about the historical Jesus I realized he made a lot more sense to me than the "Christian" one. (I was raised Catholic but left it in high school.)

I loved that last statement in the article because it is going to really piss off some evangelical Christians who are so much "better" than the rest of us:

"Because I am convinced that one can be a devoted follower of Jesus without being a Christian, just as I know that one can be a Christian without being a follower of Jesus."

loved it. It is very interesting to see how all of this has played out over the centuries.

However, I would dispute the supposition that Jesus was illiterate. The incident where he amazes the scholars in the synagogue hints at, and his later title of 'Rabbi', implies that he received a temple education, in which case he would have been highly literate.

A digression here, but interesting: Jesus could have spoke as many as four languages, (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and maybe Latin) although the Bible does not explicate this.

The Bible mentions Jesus talking with Pontius Pilate, but mentions no interpreter being present. Since it was highly unlikely that Pilate spoke Hebrew or Aramaic, they probably conversed in Greek, the lingua franca of the 1st Century Mediterranean world.
