When is any rape "legitimate"?

Missouri Republican U.S. Senate candidate made some waves yesterday when he was asked about his opposition to abortion in any situation, including rape. He replied: “First of all, from what I understand from doctors that [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

That has to be the most ignorant, demeaning statement I’ve ever heard from a politician. It’s so wrong on so many levels. First of all, does he really think women’s lady parts have the ability to tell the difference between which little squiggly, swimming sperm cells are invited guests and which are not???? I had to do some Googling to see how he could come up with such nonsense. Apparently the anti-abortion forces that want to outlaw all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest, have tried to claim that pregnancy from rape doesn’t even occur, claiming that “trauma is a natural form of birth control”. Now I see – if the rapist is considerate enough to rough up his victim a bit her lady parts come to the rescue and somehow ward off those evil, uninvited sperm cells? Don’t insult my or women’s intelligence. And how about if a rapist isn’t so considerate as to inflict physical trauma on his victim. Or, a favorite of frat parties, plies his victim with liquor or date rape drugs and then takes advantage of her?

<snip>

That is a record to be deeply ashamed of. And apparently Congressman Akin doesn’t think those 28% of rape victims who are raped by their husbands are victims of “legitmate rape”. As a Missouri state Representative he spoke out against an anti-marital rape law, questioning if it might be misused “in a real messy divorce as a tool and legal weapon to beat up on the husband“. No, Congressman Akin, NO means NO, and it is a wife who is forcibly raped by her husband is the one who is “beat up on”. Apparently Congressman Akin and his ilk think enough women claim rape when they were just giving into their sinful ways that they need to invent a category of “legitimate rapes” to distinguish them from all the faux rapes that slutty women claim in order to get away with their base promiscuity. Expect Rush Limbaugh to condemn these women at any time.

I think if a woman who is a victim of a rape and becomes pregnant from that rape chooses life and chooses to bring that child into this world she is a true saint. But I also would have nothing but the highest respect and empathy for a woman who chooses not to bear that burden, a constant reminder of the pain and suffering she endured. It’s her body, her choice.

The kind that occurs when he and Paul Ryan write laws like HR3. It doesn't get women pregnant; just screwed.
